I can't wait for this meet already. Actually, I can't wait for tax season to be over so I can get to work on my part. Another three weeks.

Not like Chambersburg didn't need a bit of urban renewal...

Bump for the day...!!!

The burning of Chambersburg..... Not during the Gettysburg Campaign....actually July 30th, 1864.....

Rampaging through the town, Confederate soldiers broke into houses and evicted residents, smashed furniture, heaped the pieces into piles, and then set them on fire. By eight a. m. the city was in flames. As the city burned, renegade soldiers robbed citizens, looted stores, and drank whatever liquor they could find. Some demanded ransom money to spare a home, then torched it anyway after the ransom was paid. Not all Confederates participated in the sacking of Chambersburg. The Masonic Temple was spared when an officer who was also a Mason posted guards to prevent its burning. When the colonel of the 21st Virginia Cavalry refused to obey the burning order, he was arrested and his entire unit sent out of town. Other Confederates tried to help frantic citizens retrieve household goods before their homes were burned. In the end, perhaps 550 buildings went up in flames. In spite of the widespread arson and looting, the Rebels killed only one civilian, an elderly African American. Angry citizens killed at least five Confederates by the time the raiders had withdrawn.

Jerry...C.S.A. didn't burn Chambersburg, during, or on the way thru, during the Gettysburg Campaign... They burned a couple of "Out-Buildings"...but not the City, itself. That came in 1864, when Confederate Gen. John McCausland demanded a $500,000.00 ransom from the City, and they refused, or couldn't get the money together quick enough...so his Calvary burned the City.....

Wow....I suspected that you MIGHT be right....for a change.
Here I thought most of the post-G-burg action was south of the M-D line....

Not to get off-track, with the thread...and it's my fault.....but R.E. Lee invaded the North 2 times...The first time was in Sept. of '62...Sharpsburg, Maryland...thus the " Battle of Antietam"...The bloodiest ( single day ) in American history... 23,000 casulities in ( 1 ) day....
Gettysburg, second invasion, was...and is to this day...53, to 55,000 casulities, over a ( 3 ) day period...the most "horrific" fighting, ever...on the North American contenient....

Not off track at all - this is the thread about the meet. These are all things that are relevant to the area we are visiting. Rob and I will have a little surprise for you guys once he gets past Tax Day.

Denny, I think I need to invite you to our annual Fredericksburg Frolic!
