ap2 oil consumption
hi, just wondering if the oil consumption in my 2.2 is in line with what others have experianced. i live in phoenix so the first change was done at 3500 miles. no loss of oil from new to 3500. just checked fluid level and after 1000 miles it is down 2 diamonds or 2/5 of a qt. i estimate usage of 1 qt between 2000/2500 miles of driving. i believe this is in line with the manual but i am curious about what others have found and if it seems normal to have used none until 3500 and then start using oil after the first change. thanks phil

I have an AP2 and have had no oil consumption problems. I changed my oil at 1800 miles and very 2000 miles after that. I currently have 21000 miles on my 05.

dont scare the man! Any of you guys drive hard, or use Vtec atleast 2 times a drive? the use of Vtec will change your oil comsupsion a lot. My self for example, I will burn a qt every 2k if I just have fun with the car, if I race I burn up to a qt every 1k. But the oil that you use makes a big difference. I no longer burn any oil at all, even racing with Mobile 1 Synth. When i used plan Mobile I would burn what I have stated. So take that into account too. I have 61,000miles on mine

I would say, even for an AP2, that 1qt every couple thousand miles or so is not alarming, however, the general trend for AP2's is that these are much more disinclined to using oil at all. Keep track of the consumption, based on the type of driving you do, to see if it changes. Like already asked, what brand and viscosity and type of oil did you go with at that last change? I suppose it is entirely possible that you have a bad PCV valve, in which case, try to have it checked out or even replaced with a new one. They aren't that expensive. If the situation continues, I would suggest getting a "Krankvent" and install that in the PCV line. It's like a high priced PCV valve, but much better in preventing excess oil loss through the PCV system. |

I have a MY04 AP2 and hit Vtec a few times almost every time I go out. During the 7,000 mile engine break-in period with the original Honda oil I burned about 1/2 quart. Haven't burned a drop since and have run about 20,000 miles total.... no track. Used Honda oil up to 12,000 and then switched to Castrol Syntec.

I have an 06, and after 24K miles, I haven't burned any oil at all. I used Mobil 1 Synthetic 10w30 after 11K miles. Dyno oil before, but no consumption. I Vtec more then 3 times daily.

I have a MY '05 8,000 mi. using Mobil 1 10W-30. The car had never used any oil until I tracked it. It used over 1 qt. during 2 days of HPDE (lots of VTEC). Since then it hasn't used any more oil with occ VTEC in city driving.

thanks for all of your input and suggestions.
as you suspected repiv the manual has not changed. i reread it after reading your reply and it only says to check at fillup. i must have gotten my info reading the forum and somehow attributed it to the manual. getting old is tough!! beats the other option. i had the oil changed at a honda dealer when they installed my oem front lip. i believe it was 10/30 dyno oil. told them no synthetic until it gets to 10000 miles. i pulled ouy my reciept and recalculated the miles driven since the oil change. 1200 miles and 2 diamonds down should equate to 3000 miles to use a quart. occasional vtec around town. it does seem that the 2.2 uses very little or no oil according to the replies. as suggested i will monitor and see what transpires.a new pcv valve and then a switch to synthetic at 10000 and krankvent after that if no improvement is seen with the pcv. don't mind adding a little oil but it will be interesting to see how things progress. this is a GREAT car. ![]() |

IMO. Oil consumption has a lot to do with the way a car is broken in. I followed the break-in procedure in the manual with religion. After the 600 miles, I drove it hard. I have not used a drop of oil. I waited until 5,000 miles for the first oil change (I didn't like that). I now have 6,000 miles and have not used any additional oil.
I drove down to the Dragon in NC this past fall. It is a 1600 mile round trip from NJ. There was lots of VTEC and high rpms once there. There was no additional oil usage there either. I am waiting to 10,000 miles to switch to Synthetic (Amsoil).
