View Full Version : End of the drive
I would like to thank everyone that was able to spend the week or part of it with Cammie and I. Without members who drive the long distances, and we had some mileage champs this time, the drive would not be as much fun. It was great meeting new people and seeing old friends.
Thanks again for spending time with us.

The drive (as well as planning & preparations) exceeded all our expectations. We had a group of really nice people with diverse talents and interests; beautiful scenery, great conversation, and wonderful memories... can't wait to do it again.
Coop, Cammie, and everybody who travelled to New Mexico-Arizona-Colorado for the drive.... THANK YOU!!!

What can I say that hasn't been echoed above? Coop, you and Cammie did a wonderful job of hosting a very memorable trip. Thanks again and we hope to see you and our other new friends again soon.
Rachel noticed that you spent "your" vacation ensuring that "our" vacation could be enjoyed to the max. We really appreciate that.
Safe travels home.

Got up by the crack of dawn (though it seems that Kraemer beat us) and got on the way south on 550. Managed to beat the bikers, so got to Santa Fe around noon.
Thanks again for organizing this!

We clocked 4265 as of this AM before leaving Ouray, CO ...... and what a drive/ride.......
Well...... we did NOT beat the cyclists and decided to take the loooooong way north, east, and then south to Santa Fe (got there at 6PM) and then to Santa Rosa via Rt66 for the night .... and there is still a little neon left on the street. Thank you again Coop and Cammie for planning and leading this great adventure in the west. To our new friends from Canada, CA, MN, MI, AZ and TX (already new the MD folks) .... until we meet again .. it was a pleasure....... Please come to the DC area anytime

I agree with what everyone above has said. Even though I was only on the drive for one day, I thoroughly enjoyed my time with everyone! :) Meeting the old friends and making many new ones made that 2 night, 1 day stay worth while and has made my year thus far. We truly do have a great group of people in this club, and I look forward to meeting y'all again in the future. :)

As one who has been fortunate enough to make both of Coop's drives out west, I must say that both have been absolutely fantastic! Bruce puts in a ton of work and research to put these together, and each one has been flawlessly executed. As with most club events, it's the people who make it or break it, and each drive has had a wonderful group of people who genuinely enjoyed themselves the whole time. Thanks to all those who drove the distance!
Rocketboy and I left after breakfast with Rob and Rachel, Ken and Marilyn, and Kerry. Sorry I didn't get to say a proper goodbye to those of you I missed. :o
We drove 550 E to Canon City and the Royal Gorge. What a fantastic Road! Coop needs to incorporate this next time :poke:
We spent 3 hrs taking in the natural beauty at the gorge and spending too much money on t-shirts, then continued on to Trinidad, CO. Had some comfort food at the Trinidad Diner and crashed early. We left the mountains of Colorado this mornng at 7am MDT and got home to a wicked thunderstorm and the resulting traffic about 8:30 CDT - 12.5 hrs with few stops and no :police:

Rachel has started a poty of coffee and I am still working off the beers we consumed at a BBQ restaurant and micro brewery, where we had a sampler. Way too much to drink. . . .
Colorado is wonderful and I am told Independance Pass from Aspen to Leadville is open for travel. Yes S2000 travel.
Tomorrow we bed in Breckenridge CO.

We had brunch in Aspen Colorado. Nice place but I didn't feel at home, even with the S2000. Lots of Porsche's here.
Last night in a microbrewery next to our Hotel Denver I watched an obviously drunk patron stumble out of the bar, talk to a lamp post then cross the road and get into a 911 and drive away. This place is full of money and little brains in this case.
We took the Independance Pass from Aspen which was just opened 3 days ago. They warned of icy patches but we decided to chance it and turn around if necessary.

Sean, from what they tell me there have been days and days of rain at home. Some farmers have re-seeded because of wet and flooded fields. In Winnipeg people have been complaining of Forrest Tent Caterpillars, "little inch worms" that have infested the trees.
We can't complain here at all. They tell me it might rain in Denver tomorrow but that is not a hardship.

My parents over the last few years have had foxes under their porch. They raise a family and my dad says watching the pups run around is just amazing. :) I'm afraid to let my dog out in the back yard when they are there. He would be gone in a second.
What a wonderful trip home. Rachel looks as fabulous as ever. And I sure missed this trip. It was a hard one to give up for sure. Sigh.

Got back to Houston around 3pm yesterday. Left Santa Fe on Sunday morning and stopped in Abilene for the night -- a nice, leisurely drive, mostly off highway. No cops, no traffic, no stress -- and pretty much the same speed as on the interstate. Saw two S2000s along the way; one in the middle of nowhere near Clovis, NM and one outside Abilene.
Took Hwy 38 from Abilene to Houston (connects to 290 outside Brenham). Again, a very nice and scenic drive without any obvious speedtraps along the way. Highly recommendable. :)
Now off to start my laundry......

Haven't seen the car for a couple of days while touring Denver, CO. I felt so bad I bought it an oil change at a place called Grease Monkey or something like that. They did a bang up job, very similar to Mr Lube or Super Lube in Canada.
We arrived in Hill City, SD for the night and just touched the edge of a rain storm. That is the first rain we have seen since Cheyenne, WY over two weeks ago.
We are looking forward to getting home but are still enjoying the sights on the road. Tomorrow we plan to review some of the Black Hills and Bad Lands areas for their simple beauty and great driving roads.
Hopefully we will meet Fred (fredric) and Rosemary (Irish Rose) in Grand Forks before leaving this beautiful country.
I have said it before but will say it again. You Americans are great ar finding a piece of heaven and building a great road right to it for everyone to enjoy. NM152, CO550 and Independence Pass are three of my favorites.
Thanks for the hospitality,

Made it home to Winnipeg after meeting some good friends in Grand Forks ND for lunch. We shared all the good stories from the trip and told so many of the stories that Fred and Rose Mary wouls almost believe they were on the trip with us.

Speaking with Fred and Rose Mary we agreed there are so many US destinations with so much diversity that there is little need to leave the continent. There is still so much to see.
We couldn't find any S2000's to follow in Sturgis so we tagged along with some bikes.

Nice twisty roads along Spearfish Canyon.
The Boarder Guard looked in the car and asked "just the two of you in the car?" I dropped the top to answer the rest of the questions. As we left he said "Welcome home". That made us feel good even though we have left some new friends behind.
Thanks all for a wonderful vacation.

You will have to be careful about the timing on the 2012 trip. We have a grandson who will be graduating from high school at the end of May in 2012. Two years ago our oldest grandson felt slighted because we were on the Anasasi Tour and missed his graduation.:o Of course he did have the chance to drive Grandps's S to his prom and the car was a real hit.

Guess we are the last to "check in". Arrived home late last night after our extended (7,526 mile) western tour.
Mega thanx to Coop and Cammie, and to all the new friends we made. I'd leave tomorrow to do it all again (well..... maybe the day after??). The "2010 Enchantment Tour" was absolutely everything that we hoped it would be.... and more. What a GREAT time!!!

Hey Roy, Carole,
You certainly out-did us in mileage (5024 for us). And we totally agree with you about the Enchantment Drive. Again, our hats off to Bruce and Cammie for a well-planned tour.
My clutch seems to be holding up. Thanks for your concerns.
Still curious about removing the spare tire for any "long trip." I seem to recall that you had removed yours (?). Did you bring a can of tire inflator with you? And did you toss the jack and tools, too? With the trunk full, it seems there's no obvious place to put the full-sized tire ... so, I guess, what's the point of bringing the spare and the tools. What's your take on this Roy?
We're looking forward to seeing you both again, and other fine S2K friends in Asheville! :D The list is growing longer... may break attendance records.
All the Best,

Hi George,
Sorry for the delay here.... been a bit crazy.
Glad the clutch is behaving. Probably was just 'reacting' to the extra exercise  .
I did make the trip west without a spare, but did keep the jack and tools...and an extra set of 'standard' Honda wheel lugs. In fact, I cannot recall the last time I had the spare in the well. Because it is a smaller diameter, and the "S" positraction makes it unsuitable to have different diameter tires on the rear, the space-saver really can only be used on the front. As a result, a flat rear involves replacing a front tire with the space saver, and moving the good front to the rear (even that winds up giving you slightly different diameter rear tires). That is such a HUGE pain in the a** that I decided some time ago that a paid up AAA membership (with extended towing) and a charged cell phone would be a better way to address a tire emergency than carrying the space saver spare..... plus, the extra luggage space really helps! I do check tires daily, including monitoring tire pressures (manually). We also had the added margin for the trip west of having four brand new Goodyear Eagles for the trip.
A tire problem on a drive is going to be a hassle with or without the space saver, and a full size spare simply won't fit in an "S", so while I hope I never have to deal with it.... AAA and the cell phone will be the "security blanket".
Have done one more drive (in Ohio) since we are home, and tires still have plenty left for Asheville.
Have done some work on the photos, but the site is balking at accepting uploads (probably just me). Will keep trying.
See you in Asheville!

Cammie & I went out to the "Cat Walk" today. To me it was very different and nice place. Being able to walk in a canyon about 50 feet above the river was neat. The short hike was about 45 mins and the long one about 1.5 hours, so we wold of been pressed for time.
We also found out that even if we had crossed the first river crossing, I don't think we would of made it passes the last one, and there where 4 of them. Today, that first river crossing was dry, not a drop of water, but the last one had about 2-3 inch of water and was a deeper crossing.
will try to get up some pictures later

I chose the picture in the Colorado mountains for the print. We all had our cars photographed by Cammie at that site and I was very pleased with the results. The actual print is even better than the files that Cammie posted. If it was Photoshopped, I can't tell.
