View Full Version : Getting your S Ready

Between now and May I will do a fluid change (oil, diff and transmission) as well as a wash and wax.
I will also need a set of tires for my S. I ate through the original Bridgestone RE50s, but decided I'd try a second set. I got a little better wear, and the 3rd and current set are RE50A's (Pole Positions) and have done much better. They won't last the 2000 mile transit west, the 1200 mile Enchantment and the 2000 mile return (let alone a run of the Dragon in April) ...... I'm not a track guy or even a hard driver, and I don't drive the S in winter .... to some I drive like my Dad (now 83). I'm inclined to try the all season tire just to get a little better tread life but I'm open to suggestions ..... What tire are you riding one?

I have the Bridgestone RE760 Sports on the car now and I think they are a good compromise for you. They have a tread wear rating of 340 but grip really well. It is not a max performance tire but pretty close. I moved up to 17" wheels recently and had these on the 16" rears. After 4000 miles the wear was very even and I would say a had at least 7/32 of tread left and I don't baby the car. I liked them so much I but them on the 17" wheels.

Might consider these ..... I'd like a few more miles between new tires.

I have the Bridgestone RE760 Sports on the car now and I think they are a good compromise  I agree. I do a lot of driving on all kinds of roads and am VERY happy with the tires; enough so that I'm on my second set.
Even with 340 tread wear ( A / A traction & temp ratings) they are still considered Ultra High Performance Summer tires.

a lot of people are liking the "Star Specs"
I would read the last couple of pages, the others are over 1.5 years old

I have been using the Sumitomo HTR Z III and I like them

I think I'll keep on riding on my current set of S02s until we get back from the trip, then I'll swap the rears for the ones I got from Blackflag for the trip to S2KDays, and then I'll figure out what kind to get next... :)
From the other thread I started the Star Specs sound promising...

I'll echo the above quote. I purchased REAR RE760's on our way home from the east coast, thinking I would replace them as soon as possible with S02's.
I ran them till nearly bald with the original S02's on the FRONT with little notice that I had mixed tires. They performed well, never swapping ends or even giving me a surprise.

If anyone is interested in Dunlop Star Specs, there is a $50 rebate right now. Everyone likes to save money!
Between February 1st and March 31st, 2010, receive $100 Mail-In Rebate when you purchase a four tire and four wheel package. Or receive a $50 Mail-In Rebate when you purchase any set of four tires or four wheels. Purchase must be made with your CarCareONE Credit Card to qualify.
That's a deal-breaker for me. I don't need any additional credit cards influencing my credit rating/score...
And for what it's worth, Tire Rack sells the fronts for $9 cheaper and the rears for $5 cheaper, so that's $28 total or 56% of the rebate, without any hassle.

So you will be buying some Dunlops from Tire Rack. You can give me a review when we meet up in Alamogordo.

WHAT'S MISSING???
You're going to be close to the Mexican border, and ICE has been known to set up checkpoints along I-10. Even if you don't plan on crossing the border, it might be a good idea to bring your passport.

I also put on Bridgestone Potenza All-Season tires and I'm very satisfied with them. You might lose 10% at the top in terms of handling, but it's not very noticeable.
They ride slightly harder than the Summer Bridgestones, but the difference is negligible, considering the longer tread life.
FYI: When we purchased the S2K, it had mis-matched tires and it didn't seem to affect the handling particularly, at least for street driving.
Between now and May I will do a fluid change (oil, diff and transmission) as well as a wash and wax.
I will also need a set of tires for my S. I ate through the original Bridgestone RE50s, but decided I'd try a second set. Realy like the Direzzas. Nice smooth ride, great in the rain and on the track. Quite too.

Trailer test drive was great - didn't even have any leaks during the rain storm .....
I've been home for 2 weeks or so now ..... bags are almost packed ..... the trailer isn't quite full yet. The S got a bath, wax and some 303. I will probably get a new battery this week - looking at the Kirkland from Costco 3 year 500 amps $55 - if they have Fitment 20 (51 series). I didn't see it at the one I went to today so I'll try the other one tomorrow ......
Someone told me to bring CHAP-STICK - especially for the higher elevation in NM ..... so add that to your "secret compartment" stash .....
Man are we excited ...... :hyper: :hyper: :hyper: :hyper:

For what its worth Walmart batteries are made by the same high price name brands. Put one in the Volvo a few years ago. I think its Johnson Controls. At Costco you have to keep up your membership for the warranty. Found that out with tires.

yep..I was looking at the Everstart at Wal-mart . Our S2000 takes the 51 ... Its $67 and only has the 2 year warranty. I may have to buy this one if I can't get the 3 year one from Costco for $55.
