View Full Version : Gas tank electrical connection?

Also in my '02 donor dissassembly I've run across a connector on top of the gas tank that has resisted all my efforts to remove.

It is the gray roundish connector that sits right on top of the tank just under the removable plate. The wire comes from inside the car.

I'm sure there's an easy way to release it, but so far I haven't found it.

Can anyone instruct me on the proper way to remove it so that I don't destroy the connector?

I am sure there is a release on the connector. I will pull mine and take a look for you when I get back to thr house

Thanx. I'm sure there's a release as weil, but it's hiding. Probably in plain sight.

If you're talking about that wiring bundle that goes into the metal lid with the 3 bolts on it, those 3 bolts have to be removed and the lid lifted up. Under that, you will see that the wiring bundle continues to a wiring harness that can be unclipped from the top of the fuel pump. The wiring bundle stays with the lid. After that, the fuel lines are quick disconnects. Hold the main body of the disconnect, squeeze the bigger part and slide it back onto the main body.

I got it off finally, but the disconnect was not very obvious and it didn't help that the connector was stuck on so it didn't seem that me pushing on the tab was doing anything.

Now on to the next issue. I've got to get the wires disconnected from the Evap canister area. The hoses that connect to the Evaporative Canister et al underneath and behind the driver's seat are for Evaporative gases and not liquid gas, correct?

I'd really hate to pull them lose and get a face full of gas.

The canister serves as a catch for liquid, it then eventually evaporates off. Sometimes if the tank is overfilled gas collects enough there to not evaporate out and you could has some fuel in there. I am not sure if it is under pressure though.

You really need to buy and OEM service manuall. (http://www.helminc.com) While you are at it, get the ETM (Electronic Troubleshooting manual) for the car as well. These two books cover everything in geat detail

I have the factory manual along with the ETM manual, but they are little help in most of the cases I've looked up. They say things like "remove the evaporative canister" without telling you how or any issues you might encounter. I guess it's supposed to be obvious cause you work at Honda and have already done it before.

The car has been immobile for a couple of weeks now so I'm guessing there won't be any fluids left as long as there's not a direct pathway to the tank.

You can reach the bolts to remove the canister, but you have to remove the canister assembly to reach the other bolts that releases the rest of the assembly which means you have to disconnect some hoses.

There's a wire on the canister I can reach to disconnect, but you have to get the whole assembly out to remove the other wire.

^ hmm I have to agree with wildncrazy that the service manual is lacking on the tips/details department. In fact when I did my fuel pump it did not look like the exploded diagram that was pictured in the service manual.

I found out there was an unusual slip on rubber connector for the top half of the evap canister assembly that allowed me to slide it off and lower it enough to get the elec. connectors disconnected. I did have to remove the small hose that comes from the top of the gas tank and that was just vapor. There are 2 large hoses that appear to come from the side of the tank which could be an issue with liquids.

You can't siphon the gas out of the tank. I've tried 4 different hoses and none of them will go all the way down to gas. I guess I'm limited to the manual described method of removing the inspection panel and pumping the gas out.
