I have a 2005 and a couple of weeks ago my SRS light came on. I took the car to the dealer and they told me that it something shorted out in the SRS unit and it was going to cost around $900 to replace the unit . :yikes:

That seem really high so I decided to do some research. I found that i could order the unit new for about $430 and i don't mind doing the wrenching. But I also found used ones from ebay going for as low as $115 (from accidents where the airbags did not deploy).

My question is does anyone have any experience with using a used SRS unit (Is that recommended)? And about how much work is involved to take off the center console (radio) to get to the SRS unit?

Thanks in advance.

You could always try this first. Only costs $10 or so.

I think the dealer already reset the light. The light was off when i left the dealership (I thought the issue went away) but came back on a day later..

But hell for $10 bucks, I'll give that a shot.

If they reset it already and the light came back, then the next step must be taken. Whether it be replacing the SRS unit or something else will depend on whether or not the dealer diagnosed the problem correctly. Did they pull a code that indicated it was a problem in the SRS unit or were they guessing? Maybe the problem or the short is somewhere else. A degraded ground can also create problems. There are many places where a short or a ground can be an issue.
Nevertheless, it's not necessary to remove the center console. The radio surround can be removed without touching the console. You just have to work at it from different angles to get the radio cover off. Once it's off, the radio is easily removed. Then you can see the SRS unit. It would be wise to follow the service manual on this as the SRS system needs to be disconnected from power for several minutes before you mess with any part of the SRS. It can remain energized for some time after the battery has been disconnected.

I have an SRS unit, make me an offer. It is just sitting in storage. Not like I will be using the SRS system in a track car. ;)

if you do go the route of getting a used SRS unit from EBAY or the such, if the airbags went off in an accident, the SRS control unit NEEDS to be replaced - aka - the new SRS control unit you'll have will produce the same results.
also - your going to have to program the new SRS unit to your car.... at least I think so.........

They didn't give me the exact code but the service manager told me that it was the SRS unit that they needed to replace to correct the problem (he said that it looks like an internal short).

I'm glad i won't have to pull the entire center console because that looks like a pain with the seats and everything.

I was trying to answer your message but it's saying that you can't receive PM's. The deal sounds great please let me know if you still have the part. I total lost track between the holidays and trying to close on a house.

Thanks, again
