I have the dates for my drive in 2010. MEMBERS ONLY (it's only $35.00 to become a member)
The drive speed will be about the same as the 2008 drive.
Enchantment Drive 2010 May 24 - 28
Cost will be $50.00 for the driver, $30.00 for the passager
this cost will go for a Polo or nice sweatshirt, the handouts I make for everyone and water/soft drinks to be carried on the trailer. Leftover money will be given back.

I will base the drive off of this thread http://forums.s2kca.com/showthread.php?t=31900
I could not get any time off in June, so this date would let most people have a 3 day weekend to get home. I added a poll, can not fit all of the places people want to see on the last poll, so now it is time to choose. This way I can see what the people who are signing up, want to see

here are some of the places we will be seeing.
Canyon De Chelly (http://www.americansouthwest.net/arizona/canyon_de_chelly/national_monument.html) ruin in AZ, everyone really like this stop.
Very Large Array (http://www.vla.nrao.edu/) just for Sean
White Sands (http://www.americansouthwest.net/new_mexico/white_sands/national_monument.html)
Gila National Park (http://www.nps.gov/gicl/index.htm) just outside of Silver City, NM. This will be a stop, because of a very good road NM152
El Malpais National Monument (http://www.nps.gov/elma/index.htm) Grants, NM
El Morro National Monument (http://www.nps.gov/elmo/index.htm) Grants, NM
Acoma Pueblo (http://sccc.acomaskycity.org/) Grants, NM

And some roads
The Million Dollar Highway (http://www.motorcycleroads.us/roads/co_us550.html)
CO highway 149 (http://www.motorcycleroads.us/roads/co149.html) for the Texans, this is where the Rio Grande starts
NM 152 (http://www.motorcycleroads.us/roads/nm152.html) This road will be in the trip, great road. My neck hurt after driving it

I will have the start and finish points later and hotel information a I get it all set up.
Please let me know if you are interested in the drive.

If you sign up to go, please PM me you email address, will make it easier to send you up dates

Hooray Again!!!

I voted the way I did because I found out that I can't do caves. Not because they scare me, but because since the lightning strike, apparently I completely lose my balance in them. Oooops.

The area between Pueblo and Arizona interests us very much. There is some great topography and some ruggid landscapes in the area. Route 96, 165, 149, 160, 550 and 145 in particular look spectacular for driving. The area also hosts some great stops as well.

The area around Albuquerque also holds some great sights.

We are coming from the north and will travel (hopefully) on scenic roads from Denver south. We are very bullish on the million dollar highway and route 152, however we have plenty of time and may take some of these drives on our way down or back if they are missed on the tour.

:bgbounce: Looking forward already!

getting a new mapping program this week.
Google is showing one part of the drive to be about 7:30 and my Garmin GPS shows it to be 5:10.
The Delorme map will let me put in the speeds and be more detailed. It is what I used on my last trip and help me figure out which is correct. Again, trying to keep the drive times under 6 hours.

I think I have the routes planned, so hope to tell more next week.

Pikes Peak is out of the way, and I am sure some do not want to drive their car on a dirt road.
Eagle Nest is nice, but not a lot to see, we did it last year.

What do you think?

We can have Cammie and Mindy fly into Denver on Saturday afternoon. They can take a complimentary shuttle to a nearby hotel. We will arrive that afternoon/evening. The next morning we get up and drive to Ouray. It looks like about 7 hours to Ouray from Denver.

The Doubletree Hotel Denver-Southeast is only $65/night and they have a shuttle to the airport.

I'm almost done ...... I've got one more reservation to make ... Carol (Silver City) was out sick today .. Seems you need to speak with Coops's POC at each hotel .. otherewise the rest of the staff is like a deer in headlights ....

Ulrich

It's alright... If they don't know what they are doing...? I actually ended up with one or two confirmations for rates below the "official" rate. Not sure if they end up honoring those, but I'll certainly try. :)

Jason has had the same experience as Ulrich in a couple of cases.

If you have confirmation numbers, and print outs, they better honor them. :)

which hotels gave lower rates?

I couldn't get anyone to answer the phone at the Comfort Inn in Silver City this afternoon... sooooo I went on line and got a military rate of $70+tax. Not sure if I'll have to give them some kind of orders or something .......I did this 1) because I'm retired Navy and 2) noticed some of the rates at the other hotels were the military/government rate.

lacochino
01-27-2010, 05:41 AM
Jason can't remember now which one gave him the best rate...... Huh.

4U2NV
01-27-2010, 05:33 PM
We are all booked up at the hotels now! Alamogordo and Socorro gave me a little better deals than you had posted. Since I like bargains, I didn't correct them to pay the higher rate.

:pig: and I will see you in New Mexico on Sunday!

Coop
01-28-2010, 06:55 PM
Don't get me wrong, TAKE THE BETTER DEALS, I am just a little pissed since I took the time to work something out with the manager and then this happens. I want everyone to get the better deals, and I could of gotten the better deal, since I am a federal employee and a AAA member.

CitadelBlue

Just a regular ID or business card, if anybody asks. If nobody asks, don't rock the boat (or check in last so that the rest of us don't get asked to produce something similar)... ;)

Concur... Usually, all that is needed is a government/military ID and you are good to go .. One place however, asked for a set of orders (believe it was in PA) - stating "the company" was cracking down. Since I didn't have the orders, they/we settled for the AAA rate which was comparable.

well tonight, our host hotel has no water. Works broke a mail water pipe. Hopefully they will have water tomorrow, if not we will move to another hotel. I should know in the morning and will contact everyone if there is a change.

Thanks for the heads-up, and I'm glad you made it ok. I have the shirts and stuff packed in the car. Hopefully we'll leave within the hour.
