Dave, you bring a helluva lot of S2-specific knowledge to these boards and the world, apparently much more than many of the Honda techs at shops. (With apologies to any Honda techs that are offended by this conclusion.) As you pointed out in a recent post, it's probably true that Honda techs at dealers and specialty shops work mostly on Accords, Civics and Honda products other than the S2, primarily because there are far fewer of the latter on the road. Recently, as you know, I had to question the tech about the oil filter that was put on my S2 and it turns out that it was not the one recommended by Honda. (Thanks to Kevin (mlc) for that great sleuthing job!) What concerns me is that people like me, who aren't very savvy under the hood of any car, much less the S2, have to rely on people who don't work on our cars frequently enough to insure that the correct parts are replaced and the maintenance procedures are performed correctly. Now I don't mind learning more about the S2 by reading these threads and asking dumb questions but I'm thinking there are a lot of people out there with S2s that aren't on these boards and who knows what the techs are doing to their cars. Moreover, I don't want to have to second guess every part replaced or every procedure performed by the shop, but I will if I must. As a case in point, when I questioned the shop owner the other day about the oil filter I detected a bit of irritation that a neophyte like me would ask such a thing. But, when he discovered that it was the incorrent filter, he was immediately apologetic and offered to replace it on the spot.
At any rate, this thread is partly to say thank you for sharing all your expert knowledge and to ask the broader membership if they have concerns similar to those I posed above. Or, maybe this forum exists because of these concerns and I'm just now getting it?
Wayne you are correct we are absolutely privileged to have Dave here. You should try doing a repair with one of his DIY threads it is almost like he is standing there showing you what to do. I have worked on my own cars for many years so I am comfortable working on it with Dave's info. Unfortunitely if you don't have the place or the resources to do the work yourself you are going to have to rely on someone else. I would suggest reading through the DIY section, there is allot of great information in there.
Consider yourself lucky that you have people to show what has been done and make sure that things are being done correctly. I would say that your's is probably the only S2000 your mechanic will be working on so there will be a learning curve. It should be safe to say that after this last episode with the oil filter he will be much more detailed about what he is doing with your car.
Should we put you down for Dave's tech day at Ashevile if he comes next year??

I agree that Dave is a most positive asset to this group. I made a post with the suggestion that his membership should be gratis but I don't think it ever happened.
Thanks again for all you do.

Wayne, it is I, who am privileged to know you on the forum. I don't know if I can make it to S2K Days next year, but if I do, I truly hope we can further cement our camaraderie in this common interest. Sometimes, I get a bit sarcastic after seeing some of the silly things that people do to their cars out of lack of knowledge. This is only because of the response I get when I give them an answer they weren't wanting to hear. I try to have an open mind about some topics and I don't even mind the same questions being asked year after year if the question is legitimate. I've been at this for nearly 10 years now. Even "dumb" questions can be legitimate. It's when I tell people to consider a certain possibility and the response is, "NO WAY! You're full of it. I'll get to the bottom of it myself. I know the answer already. I just wanted someone to back me up." You can see how this can get a bit annoying. Sometimes, I just don't say anything. Other times, my odd sense of humor fires up and I can be a little ................. well .................... :poke: :freak2: I don't mean anything by it. It's just to help lighten up what might become a far too serious episode in the continuing saga of "As the S2000 Turns". :p
I see this sort of stuff on the "other" forum all the time and all I can do is .................. :duh:      And sometimes ................... I just know that in a few hours or days or weeks, the guy will post back to say ................... :waa:
I don't consider any question from a true car enthusiast and S2000 nut to be frivolous or too repetitious. Ask away. In fact, if you ever feel you want to arm yourself ahead of time about something you are about to have done to the car, just post it up for opinions and an idea of what you should be expecting. This way, if something doesn't quite match what you went in with, you can at least flag that point and bring it to the forefront before you drive away.
It's the horror stories I've personally witnessed and read about that compels me to participate in this sort of venue. So many really stupid things done at dealers that make me cringe. And even after all these years, this sort of thing still happens. On another forum I view, a local fellow just had he S2000 engine grenade. It turns out the dealer parts dept. gave the tech some of the old discontinued spark plugs (getting rid of old stock) to put into the car. The tech also never kept up on the recalls and memos that came down the line and he may have just screwed them in with inadequate torque. A plug backed out and the engine got fried. You wouldn't think this could happen today. BTW, my S has never seen the inside of a Honda dealership since I brought it home nearly 10 years ago.
Not all Honda techs are S2000 incompetent. The good ones will still learn and won't make Civic, Accord or Pilot assumptions about an S2000. The bad ones are just too impatient or arrogant to listen. I personally know of a few really good S2000 techs. All of them have been on these types of boards for years.
Oh, and that baby picture below. I don't really look like that in any way. Ask Bimdub one day.

I haven't been a member long, but long enough to know how much value Dave provides to us S2000 owners and enthusiasts. I appreciate the open, respectful style with which he provides advice. I *really* believe that Dave should get a permanent (and free) membership for what he does.
Dave, looking forward to meeting you.

The thing I like best about that picture is the age of all the people in the foreground. :poke: :D I would fit in nicely and look forward to Dave's Tech Days at S2KDays 2010.

Almost all of those in the picture understand that they don't know everything and can learn allot. With age comes wisdom....the wisdom to know you don't know everything and can always learn something new.

I'll stand my ground on this one. Close, however I think you really mean this one:
be·ret(bə-rā')
A round, soft, brimless cap that fits snugly and is often worn angled to one side.
Beret A Green Beret.[French béret, from French dialectal berret and from Old Provençal berret, cap, both from Late Latin birrus, hooded cloak; see biretta.]
bar⋅ret
Barret [bar-it] -noun a small cap, akin to the biretta, worn in the Middle Ages by soldiers and ecclesiastics.
Somehow I can't see Dave as an ecclesiastic... and that's our English lesson for the day.:p

And we're back at the old geezers!
Hahaha!
You're right about your beret.
Now lets continue in Dutch and see how YOU do.

I don't think this guys is conforming to the acceptable wear guidelines for a beret. Where are the fashion police??? :superman2:

So you are into :r2d2: too?
Your helis allready fly themselfs :lol3: ?
Its like when you hear a voice on the radio, you picture a face with it.
Even when you eventually see what the guy/girl really looks like, that first image in your head stays with that voice.
It's almost the same with reading posts on a forum, well.. for me anyways.
So.. you are like Jamie :jester:
Btw.. he usually is always right.
(usually always.. that is not correct is it?)
Oh well...
It has been a while since I spotted another S2000 here.
Come to think of it, I haven't seen one this year!
No tech days or any sort of community either.

You jinxed it. Late last week, I was flying one of my big coaxials and it met up with a "Charlie Brown" tree. Reached out and ate it. :( No matter, I took the guts out and stuffed it into another body of a heli that didn't fly very well from the beginning.

Yes, got back into it this year after about a 25 year absence. Playing with cars kinda took up my time. 1/2 are coxials and 1/2 are FP or CP. Tried my hand at fix wing but didn't want to join a club so I could use their "field".
