I am struggling to mate up my transmission to the block. The car is on jack stands and I am using a scissor tranny jack and a car jack.

I used a clutch alignment tool and by sight the disc appears lined up with the pilot bearing. The outer edge of the disc also appears to be lined up with the pressure plate.

The car is neutral. I could not get it into fourth as suggested in the DYI. The shaft does rotate when I turn the end of the output shaft.

I can get the tranny and block within 1/2" to an 1" of each other but cannot get them to mate. I have tried several times the past 24hrs with no luck.

The clutch fork is not in the way.

I'm thinking my issue is either the shaft splines are not mating with the disc or the pilot bearing is not aligned. Is there a way to tell whether or not the splines on the shaft are aligned and mated with the disc?

It is easy to knock the clutch disc slightly out of alignment when you first push the mainshaft into it. I always put a little film of white grease in the clutch disc and on the mainshaft. Also make sure there are no burrs on the clutch disk and mainshaft.

I was finally able to get them mated. I removed the entire drive shaft instead of just the front. Gave me more room to maneuver the tranny.

Glad you got it. When I did mine, I lucked out. No alignment tool. I just "eye balled" it and it went in. However, I did get my fork jambed up and had to pull it back to get the fork out of the way. Also, wiring harnesses (from the reverse switch and O2 sensor) kept falling in the way. Amazing how much crap gets in the way. And like Desmo indicated, I greased the disc splines just a bit.

Grease on those splines is absolutely necessary.
Not only during install.
The clutch disk needs to be able to slide a bit on those splines when the clutch is disengaged, so shifting gear is as easy as it should be.
Your trans will thank you, and you will thank yourself.

When I put my trans back in, I also eye-balled it.
Later I got a little worried about the possibilty of pushing the pilot bearing out - because of misalignment - without knowing.
But that's impossible.

This is the crankshaft flange, the pilot bearing can't be pushed out the back of the FW.
If it fits, its allright.

And I hope you put grease in the groove of the throwout.

If you followed the service manual > you did.

Thank you for the tips.

FYI. I used Honda Urea grease on the areas specified in the manual and the posted DYI.
