View Full Version : brake bleed?? Man I messed up!
First off I am a dumb a$$! I was bleeding my brakes, I have done this many times with no issues. Well I was showing my 7 year old son about how to do it. I got to the right rear the third caliper and didn't refill the reservoir. It ran out and sucked air into the system. Well I bled the caliper repeatedly until all of the air came out and it was just solid fluid. I then went ahead and bled the left rear. No air came out at all. I went for a short drive and the brakes seemed to work okay, by that I mean there was not any step on the brakes and then the pedal goes down further like there was allot of air in the system. But the pedal seems to engage the brakes further down.
I didn't have any more brake fluid or time to re-bleed the system.
I planned on re-bleeding everything this weekend but may question (have all of that) is...if you draw air into the system during the bleed does it only go into the one line that you are working on or will it draw air into the whole system...MC...ABS etc. And if so will a good re-bleeding of the system get all of the air out.
Is there anything worse then screwing something up because you are stupid??
Thanks.

I'll say it again Speed Bleeders along with checking the fluid level, simplifies the whole process.

+1 thanks for the reminder, one last thing I need to buy for my Miata.

As a matter of fact I started hearing some clunking occasionally from the right from brake. So today I took both front calipers off and added some high temp grease mixed with MOS2 powder to the moving surfaces. The drivers side caliper piston was impossible to move. I push it out with the brake pedal, then I opened the Speed Bleeder and pushed it back into the caliper. No bleeding was required and I just topped off the master cylinder reservoir.

You should do a complete re-bleed of the whole system - all 4 corners. It is entirely possible you got air into the ABS block and the junctions where the lines to each wheel split off. Do no more than 5 pump cycles, then check and top up the tank before continuing.

Kevin,
Parenthood rule # 1 states: parenthood grants you an irrevocable license to commit random stupid acts with impunity and without explanation.
Corollary to rule #1: The number of stupid acts you commit is directly proportional to the number of kids you have. (Don't even think of asking me how many kids I have!!! :yikes: )
Seriously, what a bummer. But with all the knowledge on these boards, I'm sure you'll get it working just fine by the weekend.

Thanks Wayne, yeah I will be rebleeding everything tomorrow.
I hate excuses for doing something dumb.
