View Full Version : heat on right leg
I've been doing more highway driving this summer and notice that the trim next to my right thigh and knee (the top corner of the left side of the transmission tunnel) gets pretty warm. I don't know if this is something new, or I just never noticed it before. My S2 is a 2004 with 55K miles, I've owned it for the last 20K miles. Is this a known issue? Is it a sign of a serious problem? Is there anything I can do about it? Thanks in advance

It's not an issue nor is it a problem. It's normal. There is little insulation on the transmission tunnel and the tranny gets very hot. In addition, the exhaust pipe runs close to the transmission and all the heat rises into the tunnel. If it's too much for you, you can add insulation yourself. A few people have done this.
Thanks for the quick reply. I'm relieved it's not a serious issue. I had visions of fried transmissions. Add insulation inside the car, or on the underside?
Thanks again.

Underside. It's not an easy job. Those who have done it, have done it when the tranny was out for a clutch job.

The good news is - in the winter/fall it will keep your coffee or hot chocolate warm!!!!
This was the FIRST thing I ever noticed about the car on the 10 hour drive home after I bought it...:yep:
ok, well good thing the AC works so well.

i only notice this when the outside temp is hot and the car is not moving steadily. otherwise on the highway its not too bad. would coating the exhaust with high temp paint or some type of ceramic paint help?

I notice that when the top is down my arms get all hot and sunburned. I also chalk this up as normal. :D

It's funny how when you've got a cramp in your right calf muscle, it's not quite hot enough. ;)

The pax side gets even hotter with the exhaust running down that side.
