My work situation is in a state of flux right now and I may make it.
Any drives planned heading out to San Fran so we can maybe caravan?

I wish we were getting one together - but - alas - I don't think it's meant to be this year for us. I'm trying to get Jason on a plane and out there - but he's not going for it.

We are planning to leave early in the week and take Highway 2 across the northern route. Will head to Spokane and then south.

Now it is looking like I will be working during S2K Days.
The company I contract through is getting caught short and they have been very good to me. I find it hard to say no.

Thanks,
no technically you are taking the most direct route......
assuming you plan to drop down to 84 across Oregon and then go down 5?
The Dalles is really nice....a bit windy but really nice.....
Hood River is just beautiful.......
but if you stay on 395 you will pass through /Sparks
not sure which way you will go,.....but passing through Oregon has highlights, with long distances between them......

Thanks,
I'm not very familiar with stuff north of Sacramento, but pashnit.com might give you some ideas for interesting ways to get from 395 over to the Central Valley.

As you come in on 395 into Reno, take I80 towards Sacramento; Auburn is 100 miles from Reno, and Katrina's (best place for breakfast in Norcal IMHO) is just 2 blocks off I80, on Hwy 49 (Grass Valley exit)....let me know if any of you want to hook up for the ride to San Ramone......

Better yet, load a POI file into your GPS. Then you always know the nearest In and Out.

So are these "In-N-Out Burgers" s good as everyone claims them to be? We don't have them in our part of the country and, even in all of my travels, I have never eaten one.

I love In-N-Out, but, really, it is just a burger, a very good standard burger. These are burgers made more the old fashioned way. They are smaller than most of the other chains, more like how I remember typical burgers in the 60's. The french fries are made to order by taking whole potatoes and pressing them through a die right into the fryer.
Certainly some of the appeal is just the company style:
All stores are company owned
Employees are apparently compensated better than other fast food chains, and it shows in the service. I believe they get real benefits like health coverage and paid vacations.
The pricing is simple and cheaper than the competitors. The "combinations" are really just an easier way to order if want a soda, burger, and fries. The combinations don't provide a price break; the prices are already better than most of the other chains.
It's about the only place around here where you have a choice of Coca Cola, Dr. Pepper, 7-Up, real lemonade, and real iced tea. No Mr. Pibb, Sprite, Sierra Mist or any of the other drinks trying to be what you really want. The shakes are made with real ice cream. This is reason enough for my wife and me, she can have Coke and I can have real 7-Up.
There are two menus: the simple one that has had few changes in 60 years (a couple of burgers and variations, one size of fries, shakes, three drink sizes) and the "secret" menu that was word of mouth in the 70's and a portion of which now appears on their web site at http://www.in-n-out.com/secretmenu.asp (there are a lot more lesser known secret items than the six they show there). My wife loves the grilled cheese.
This is what Food Nework magazine said a couple of months ago:
"Yeah, yeah, California has lots of highfalutin farm-to-table burgers, but when you ask locals where to find a good, simple burger, the answer is In-N-Out."

I was a bit disappointed by my first one but I don't think it was the burger. It was really more the hype generated in my head by what seemed to be every Californian's comments on In-N-Out. It's a good, simple burger for a good price.

I agree, although it does get good reviews for consistency and quality burgers, and I think the best as far as fast food goes. But, yes, too much hype may give some people too high expectations.

Thanks,
If you want the truly scenic route, you can stay on 395 to Lee Vining (by Mono Lake), then take 120 West through Yosemite.
