If there is already a thread about this, please let me know. I couldn't find one.

I have an '00 and am changing to the Hella supertones, like the ones shown here.

http://forums.s2kca.com/showthread.php?t=2831&highlight=hella+supertones

The problem is, this writeup was done for an 02+ that have two horns. My car only has one horn. I have read that I need to replace the wires and increase the fuse. I have a 20 amp inline fuse between the battery and the relay.

My question is, where do I tap in? Is it the bluw/white wire? I looked in the service manual and it says that is the wire coming out of the relay to the horn. Should I tap into that near the horn, ot tap into it at the fuse box and just run new wires to the locations?

I plan on mounting the horns like the example in the thread above.

Anyone who has an 00 or 01 that has done this (or if you know how) please chime in. I'm just not sure where to go.

I've been taking pictures so once I am done, I will do a write up for the early AP1 owners.

Thanks!

You can't run the compressor from the original horn wire, you need to isolate it with a relay. The new wire will run from the battery + to the relay contacts. The compressor + to the other relay contact and the old wires will energize the coil. You will need to attach the other side of the compressor to a good ground.

Actually, as I am thinking about it.

I think I can tap into the original horn wire and send that to the new relay trigger input (86) and then come out of the relay (87) and feed that to the new horns. I think that is the way I need to do it.

Sometimes I just need to talk it out.

Is a 20 amp fuse okay though? or should I do 15? The service manual says to use a 10 amp, so I'm not sure how much more I should do.

These ones aren't the airhorns. (there is no compressor). They are just the round red horns. Not sure what the model number is, but they are exactly the same as the ones in that thread I posted.

You are right in that you run the original horn wire to the "switching" circuit of your new relay. The fuse you will use is going to be on the "switched" circuit of the relay (ie, the circuit that will actually bring power from the battery to the horn) and thus, will be dependent upon the requirements of the horm. You don't need to worry about the original horn wiring since it's already fused. So, whatever the horn manufacturer recommends, that's what you go with.
The only reason you would increase the original fuse is if you are running the new horns in tandem (parallel) off the original circuit (ie, no new relay).

A little more detail ................ In the following I've drawn the circuitry for using a new relay when installing lights. Just substitute horns for the lights and disregard the "Option 1 and Option 2". For the "optional on/off switch", this just becomes your original horn wire.

If, you choose to not use a new relay, you simply use the original horn wire and wire the new horns in parallel and increase fuse #47 to 15 amps. This is what I did on my '00 when I installed my Fiamm Hiway Blasters.

That makes sense then. Here is how I kind of understand it.

From the steering wheel is the horn trigger. Through the fuse box and then the output wire (blue/white) is the power to the horn. I am going to tap off the blue/white wire and put that into the new relay. Then I can run my own new wires to the horns and it'll all be good.

I guess I just need to make sure I get that signal to the relay that the horns need to be sounded. So it just depends on if I need to tap it before or after the fuse box.

You're diagram will make it work.

Thank you so much for your help! I got them installed and they are working like a charm.

It was really just to make sure that was the wire that I needed to tap into.

Thanks again!
