View Full Version : Brakes noise

I switched to Carbotech brake pads and I get this horrible sound while driving, (not applying the brakes) only on the right front brake. It sounds like metal to metal grinding and it sounds like it is hitting the rotor, like it hits the rotor in some spot and makes the sound and goes away when the rotor is going around…the faster I go the closer the noise intervals get.
The pads are used, but they look ok, I don’t think there is an issue with the installation, when I switched back to stock pads there is no noise at all everything is fine…and the left side is ok with the Carbotech Pads. The rotors look ok also. I know it sounds like it must be the pads but trying to understand what the noise is…any ideas.

Thanks.

I will have to take you on your word that the installation is OK because as simple a job as it is, there are a few things that can be done incorrectly that would cause this issue. I won't go into them.

Simply switching pads (used ones at that) is not always a wise thing to do. Your rotors have developed wear patterns from the previous pads and the used pads have developed wear patterns from their previous use. You may simply have a mis-matched set of pads on that corner. The wear patterns of the rotor and the used pads may not be compatible. It may also be a matter of time before the other corners begin to develop weird conditions, too.

What type of Carbotechs?

Last year I bought a set of XP10 for the front and XP8 for the rear to use during a track day.
I'm also using them on the street now.

And they squeal like crazy!
I like it :martini2:

IOW: its normal.

I don't take my race pads off either and I smile every time I stop on a busy street when I happen to be driving the S.

Screeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeccchhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh hhh!!!

Yeah, I know they are loud, but do they squeak while you guys are driving. (Not applying the brakes)

It sounds like the pad is uneven or maybe the rotor. I will flush the brake fluid to see if it helps.

I still think it's used pads on used rotors being mismatched. It may take some time for the two surfaces to "bed in" if they do at all. Making a metal on metal noise when not using the brakes is not a normal thing.

Yes, especially at low speeds.
Actually, the squeak is gone / a LOT less as soon as I start to brake.
Mine also go like "Squeak.. squeak... squeak" but there is NO pulsation in the pedal at all.

A flush won't harm but the squeak is normal (with the Carbotechs)

Btw.. a gravity bleed works very well.

I just learned something new today. I would have never guessed they would squeal on their own. That would drive me crazy.

Well, I don’t think they should… other race pads on other cars don’t do that, I believe you are correct and the pad is unevenly worn, but I am not sure about it. Anyway the car stops great at autocross. :martini2:

They drive me and my wife crazy too. In fact the last time I had the track pad on the car too long, my wife told me to not come home until I changed them :poke:

Some race pads squeal, some don't.
Carbotech pads do squeal.
What types do you use?
Once you get some temp into them they brake very very good.

The other week I had to park in a parking garage.
That was fun!
SQUEAK!!!! bouncing off the walls.

OEM Honda brake pads WILL squeal when NOT applying the brakes... and will stop WHEN the brakes are pressed...

The noise you are hearing, maybe what was already said OR - theres no lube or not enough on the caliper slide pins or mounting metal slide points...

how much is left on the brake pads? +4mm?

and alllllll race pads squeak .. F that - squeal like a bus

Well, not to keep dragging this treat, but the problem and the original question, is the way one pad is squeaking… not all pads make the squeaking noise that way, in fact a have the same pads in all 4 corners and only the front passenger side is the one making this particular noise. I was thinking irregular pad or rotor wear, something bent, the pads are too close to rotor??? However if everyone else gets this same noise it could be normal or we all have a problem

Thanks

You're not a man unless your brake pads squeal when cold.

Aside from the levity, if one or both of the floating pins got stuck or jammed, you can wind up with one pad floating and one pad doing a big chunk of the work (usually, the inside pad). I try, and usually fail, to lube the pins when changing pads in, say, 10,000 mile intervals. When I tracked my car, I did it a lot more frequent. Use the High Temp lube.
