OK... help a electronics idiot

Have a MY00 with the factory alarm (finally got the keyless/alarm working again after 3-4 years).

Since I put air horns on a few years ago, the alarm sounds sick when it goes off. Starts off real soft, like not enough juice is going to it.

How do you wire a relay up, and install a separate siren or horn for the alarm only? Where do the wires need to go to?

Please speak in laymans language!

Looks like most relays have 3 or 4 prongs.... where do they all go to? ie. prong 1 to the orange wire from the control module under the seat, prong 2 to???, prong 3 to ????

What relay would you recommend?

Recommendations on an inexpensive siren, or should I just reinstall the old horn?

Thanks.....

I don't have the factory alarm, so can't help much here with wiring, but as for air horns, these are notorious for "going limp" after a few years just from crud getting into the little compressor or the actual horns themselves, hampering the workings of the reed that makes the noise. You might need to yank off the hose from the compressor and spray some cleaner into the hose going to the horns and blow compressed air (not too high pressure) to shoot the cleaner past the reeds. Maybe silicone spray? The compressor also gets grunged up as well. They usually have an oiling orifice that you can send some WD-40 in to clean it out and then run some light machine oil in to lubricate it. You have to run the compressor while you are doing this (someone hold the horn button).
Lastly, air horns don't work really well with alarm systems since most alarm systems only give a momentary "chirp" when they arm and disarm. Air horns need a bit longer compressor activation to build up enough pressure to make the horns sound. If you already have air horns, there is likely already a relay in place.

Here is an online installation manual for your factory alarm that might be of some use to you.

As you suspect, the output from the the alarm does not provide enough current to spin the air compressor and a rely is required. The two wires that you have going to the compressor go to the coil in the relay. You need a relay with about twice the current handing capacity of the device you are trying to power. So look at the compressor and see what the current rating is. Then as I said two of the terminals will be the coil and the rest are contacts. Find a matching set of contacts and attach one to the compressor + and the other to the battery +. The other side of the compressor has to go to a good ground. If you are not sure then run a wire directly to the negative battery terminal. But depending where you have put the compressor, there might be something closer.

The horns work fine... just tried them in the closed garage..... that was a mistake! :)

OK... I'm pretty sure (90%) the air horns I have are... without pulling the bumper.... cannot tell for sure.

Did some digging around in the "spare parts" box for the S2000, and found the relay that came with the air horns... 12v 30A

I'll email my "hand sketch" of the drawing to you.... never could figure out how to post a photo here! :)

Thanks for the help!

ps. The air horns are hooked up currently to the wiring from the old horn that was on my MY00....

If i need to run new wiring to add a horn or siren for the alarm... thats not too much trouble!
