rear defrogger issue

i have an 03 with the glass softop. i notice that the rear defrogger button never lights up when i press it in. but the glass window never got fogged up so i wasnt sure if it was working or not. Now i have a hardtop and when the window is fogged and i press the switch, it doesnt work. the fuse under the hood looks fine. is it the switch maby?

Check to see if you have voltage at the window. If you dont then check it at the switch. If power goes in the switch and not out then its the switch. Check and see if you have power at the relay also. Those three things should tell you where the problem is.

Rear defog relay is the thing just to the right of the thing I've labelled "ignition" and just above the thing labelled "28". It's the left most one of the trio of square relays. The fuse that powers that realy is fuse #19, but if that didn't work, your power mirrors and ABS modulator won't work either.

In the under hood fuse box, other than the main fuse, there's nothing there for the rear defogger, but if the main fuse was blown, a lot of stuff won't be working.
After that, check the switch itself. However, if there is a break in the wiring harness under the center console going to the rear defogger, you'd need to check there and behind the driver's rear panel (with the hooks in it). Best to start with a voltmeter across the two contacts in the glass element itself, then trace back if no voltage.
On my hardtop, if the thing isn't connected up, the switch won't light up because there is no complete circuit. I have AP1, but I think AP2 switch on the dash will work in a similar fashion.

This is your answer. You can print off my picture and take it to the dealer and ask them for the rear defroster relay. Just point out on the picture which one it is. Now, you gotta ask why it isn't there, since you have the glass rear window on your soft top and the defroster comes stock.

There is supposed to be nothing in those spaces. Don't worry about it. Those are for when you add accessories like gauges, radar detectors, etc.
