Okay so I have a 2008 s2000 CR with 12k miles on it... I have noticed that when I am in 6th gear and left of the gas I hear a loud whistle almost like a "dull flute" sound. It goes away when I push the clutch in also. I have not noticed it in any other gear. I have checked the air box thinking it was open or something but that was not it. This is my first s2000 and still learning as I go... Any ideas?? I will post this in another forum also to make sure I cover all angles for help.

At what speed does this happen? Can you make the sound at the same speed but in 5th? 4th? Does the sound originate from the rear of the car? Middle of the car? Front? What about when it makes the noise and you put it in neutral with clutch out and in?
Have you done a diff fluid change yet? Tranny fluid? What happens to the sound if you hold the stick firmly in the 6th gear gate?
Does the sound change as you slow down? Speed up?

usually around 60+, I have not been able to achieve the same sound in any other gear at any speed. The sound seems to originate from the front of the car. Example of the situation, Yesterday I accelerated through the gears and found myself in 6th when a car pulled out in front of me and I was doing approx 75mph, I left off the gas and thats when the sound starts ( a dull high pitched whistle), the sound will stop when the clutch is engaged or if i switch gears or put it in neutral. I only find it when I am in 6th at higher speed and leave the car in gear but take my foot of the accelerator. The only change I hear is the loudness of the sound as it increases with speed, but once again I only hear it when I don't have the foot on the gas pedal. I have not changed tranny or diff fluid, i got my car serviced for oil every 3k at the dealership and they check all the levels but have not said anything about due for any other changes or services.

I have a 2002 S2000 that does the same thing in lower gears. I am not much of a gear head but my father built and raced card for over a decade. His advice was to replace the clutch plate. My problem sounds exactly like yours !! Something to think about

I wanted to ask anyone out there for suggestions on some simple modifcations/bolt owns to my 2002 S2000 that may give me a noticable HP increase in lower rpms. My Honda is currently stock and I am getting ready to replace the clutch for the first time. Looking to make some changes while the honda is on the rack.

I had what seems to be, the exact same problem with my 05. I changed the diff fluid and it went away. Since then when I hear the noise it reminds me to change my diff fluid (usually once a year). I would say you have the same problem since when you put in the clutch it disengages the transmision/diff. So the sound probably isn't coming from the front of the car....
Just my observation/experience.

Oh, if you do change your diff fluid, follow Repiv's recommendation.. (do a search) You can really mess it up, if you put the wrong stuff in!
Also the sound didn't go away, right away.... Usually a couple of days after I actually changed the fluid. (dunno why)

With such a new car, I would not suspect that anything is out of the ordinary, perhaps just a sound that is different from other cars you've driven (unless some sort of damage occurred from odd use). You didn't say if this is a new noise or if it's been this way from the beginning. 6th gear does have a pretty good overdrive ratio and it can sound different.
I would suggest you get the diff fluid changed with the proper stuff, keeping in mind that not all Honda dealers know what the right stuff is. Make sure they don't put in the stuff they use for CRVs or Pilots. That will destroy your diff in a matter of hours. (Don't laugh. It's cost many a dealer a new diff.) They must get the fluid from their motorcycle division - SAE90 hypoid gear oil. Or they can use any multi-grade gear oil that is GL-5 rated. Typically, I recommend the diff fluid be changed after about 2000 to 3000 miles initially just to get the crud from break in out of the casing.
