View Full Version : CEL code P1456 is that the gas cap?

I had a CEL last night(solid not flashing) and took it to Advance auto to pull the code. It came up P1456 and the guys was "pretty sure" that was the gas cap. I took it off and put it back on and he cleared the code and the CEL did not come back on. I have a MY 00 with 59,600 miles.

Does anyone know for sure if that is the code for the gas cap?

DTC P1456 or P1457 Still
Set? Test for Internal Leaks
NOTE: This article applies to ’98–02 Accords,
’98–02 Civics, ’98–02 CR-Vs, ’00–02 S2000s, ’00–02
Insights, ’98–02 Odysseys, and ’98–01 Preludes.
If you’ve done all the prescribed troubleshooting
and the PGM Tester still shows a DTC P1456 [EVAP
control system leakage (fuel tank system)] or DTC
P1457 [EVAP control system leakage (EVAP
canister system)] is set, the EVAP system may have
an internal leak. To test for a leak between the fuel
tank side and the EVAP canister side of the EVAP
system, follow the appropriate procedure:
DTC P1456
1. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
2. Use the PGM Tester in the EVAP test mode to
turn on the EVAP bypass solenoid valve.
Clamp the vacuum hose between the two-way
valve and the fuel tank.
3. Disconnect the vacuum hose between the
canister and the two-way valve at the two-way
valve port.
4. Attach a hand vacuum pump to the canister
port of the two-way valve, and apply vacuum
until the FTP sensor voltage reads 2.10 V.
(You’ll notice it takes very little vacuum.)
5. Unplug the 2P connector from the bypass
solenoid valve.
6. Detach the vacuum pump.
7. Watch the FTP sensor voltage. If the voltage
rises above 2.15 V in 20 seconds, replace the
two-way valve and the bypass solenoid valve,
and retest.
DTC P1457
1. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
2. Leave all solenoids off, and clamp the vacuum
hose between the EVAP two-way valve and the
fuel tank.
3. Disconnect the vacuum hose between the
EVAP canister and the two-way valve at the
two-way valve port.
4. Attach a hand vacuum pump to the port on the
two-way valve. Note the FTP sensor voltage
reading.
5. Apply 2 inches of vacuum to the two-way
valve, and watch the FTP sensor voltage. If the
voltage drops more than 0.05 V in 20
seconds, replace the two-way valve and the
bypass solenoid valve, and retest.

I know but there is always that :yikes: moment when you first look down at the dash and see the light.

Is it flashing?
How long has it been since I looked at the dash?
Is it going to blow up?
Can I, should I make it home?

And then your bain kicks back in and your heart rate goes back down.

1456 refers to fuel tank, so this is generally the gas cap although this involves the pressure (or vacuum) in the tank and can relate to the tank side of the fuel recovery system. 1457 refers to the EVAP cannister and has to do with the return side of the fuel recover sytem.

Thanks Dave. Hopefully the CEL wont come back on. I will be more careful putting the cap on from now on. Did I read that there was a TSB on the filler neck? And if the problem comes back would that be something that I could still go to a dealer and see if they would fix or has to much time passed.

Yes, there was a TSB on this issue. It involved replacing the filler neck assembly. However, this TSB may only be applicable to cars still under factory warranty. If no warranty exists, they may do it under "goodwill". If you can be sure that you are putting the cap on securely, have the cap tested before asking about the TSB. Some autoparts stores will have a fuel cap tester just like they have rad cap testers. I'm sure that your Honda dealer would test the cap before they go to the effort of granting a TSB on the filler neck. It may be as simple as getting a new cap.
