View Full Version : Loose, spongy feeling clutch pedal

With in the last couple days, I have noticed a drastic difference in the 'feel' of the clutch pedal. I can basically slap the pedal and it will flop back and and forth (upto the point of disengagment) and thats several inches. I have hardly any room for clutch feel once i get to that point, due to its almost to the floor already. I can't say that it's slipping any, and it seems to disengage and engage fine, its just that my pedal is mostly 'slop' and hardly any real feel to it.

Perhaps you need to change the clutch fluid.

Sounds like you've somehow drawn air into the system. Is your fluid level low? A proper clutch fluid flush and bleed would be most likely the answer. I have a "How To" on it here with pictures.
Before you go ahead with it, you need to confirm a few things.
1. Is the pedal itself attached correctly under the dash. You must check the components down there?
2. Is the master clutch cylinder bolted securely to the firewall?
3. Is the slave cylinder bolted securely to the transmission casing?
4. Can you detect any leaks from the inside of the firewall all the way to the transmission?

Viper is absolutely right. You need to bleed the clutch. Before you do trace the lines for leaks, and make sure that the cap for the reservoir if fitting tight.

Yep, I had a loose cap over the reservoir and this happened to me. I needed to bleed the system to get it back to normal. No big deal

(i posted what happened on our today's drive thread) anyway, i'll post here since I asked here :D IT WAS in fact low on clutch fluid.....very low.....like almost couldnt see any fluid low. I was able to make it to my parents house and dad quickly diagnosed the problem. So we flushed and refilled the system and it works like new again :)...... Thanks Dave

Now you have to ask .................... Where did it all go?

Now you get to try to find out why it was low. ;)

I have no idea. Neither of us could find any leaks. The only thing dad came up with is that it evaporated. I read somewhere that if you drive a car hard then it could over time (i guess by the wording) heat up and slowly evaporate.

This is doubtful. The boiling temp of this fluid is in the 350 to 500 degree range and it might get up to just over 100 degrees at the tranny. The only way it can disappear is via a leak somewhere. The most likely place would be past the plunger and into the driver's footwell. Look at where the rod goes into the firewall at the top of the clutch pedal. If you see wetness there, you have your answer. It could also be leaking out of the ABS block near the master cylinder. If your reservoir cap was loose, it may have spilled out there but you should have seen it grunge up the area below that.

Just discovered that my master cylinder is leaking exactly there. On to the how-to thread...
