Hey, Ive got an 04 s2k with 44k miles and every now and then when I shift into 2nd gear, when i let out the clutch the shifter pops out. Does anyone know what could be causing this? Or is it just myself not putting it all the way into 2nd? Any help would be great..thanks.

Theres a TSB from Honda out on this problem. Same thing was happening to mine so I took it to the dealer and they replaced 2nd gear and the synchro's all for free.

TSB = Technical Service Bulletin. It means that if the customer is experiencing a certain problem, they know what to fix because it is a common problem/failure. Some dealers will replace for free, some will charge labor only.

Yes, they should know. They can at least look it up.

Even out of warranty, the dealer may still do it for free, depending on the relationship the customer has with them.
This second gear pop out is not uncommon for the '04 tranny. I bought a brand new one to put into my '00 and it also pops out of second gear upon engine braking if done from above 5000 rpm on down. I live with it since I'm not willing to remove the tranny and take it back to them. I've learned to drive around it by keeping my hand on the stick whenever I decelerate in that fashion.
It sounds to me that your situation is very similar but far more aggravated. It has to do with second gear not engaging solidly enough to keep it there. In my case, it is forced out due to the same vibration caused by the backlash of the tranny that caused the clutch decel buzz of the earlier cars. The root cause is the same. It's only the final manifestation of symptoms that is different.
If they'll do it from free, get it done for sure. The aggravation isn't worth it to not do it.

I actually bought my S used from the Nissan dealer with 1200 miles on it. We have a VERY good Honda dealer up here in Ft. Collins, I told them NO ONE was to drive my car unless I was in it, not even to test it. I told them to just let me know when it was done and I would drive up and test drive it when they were done. They did exactly that.

so i went and spoke with Honda today and they said they are aware of the TSB but they would have to check out the tranny before they can do the actual repairs and they said it would cost around $90 for the inspection...is there anyway to get around that part?

If found to be the problem and the TSB applies the fix, then it should be completely free of charge. However, since you have no warranty, they might have you over a barrel on the inspection fee. Maybe try another dealer.
If it's nothing to do with the TSB, then you may be on your own for the whole thing. In any case, 90 bucks doesn't seem like such a bad thing considering the whole job will cost a thousand or two.

Sounds like they are just trying to get something out of you for their time. All I did was take the tech with me on a short drive and demonstrated the problem. If I remember correctly, all I had to do was push on the throttle in 2nd and it would pop out.

oh mine doesnt pop out that bad, but it did hapen to me twice yesterday, and very violently as well, what i mean by that is the sound when it happened was very obnoxious and loud, like it was hit with a hammer and forced it out
