View Full Version : Tranny/Shifter moving under load - motor mount broken?

track only S2000. Everything was fine until this past weekend. It seems like the shifter is moving a lot (more than an inch) when I make left hand turns. I checked under the car for any broken mounts, etc... and found nothing.

I came up with 2 idea's...

1 - the motor mount on the passenger side may be damaged or broken and is allowing the entire engine to move which causes the entire tranny to move with it? that doesn't seem very realistic with the solid rear mounts of the tranny though?

2 - is it possible something snapped inside the tranny which would allow inertia of the turn to move all the gears or whatever is in there?

It only seems to do it around hard left turns.... and of course driving at slow speeds it doesn't seem to do it at all so it is hard to reproduce....

thanks!!!

None of the mounts are "solid". The motor mounts are liquid filled and the rear tranny mount is rubber cushioned. Check them all carefully. Has the tranny been pulled ever? Maybe some of the bolt have backed off.
Also, take apart the shifter area to see that all those bolts in tight and nothing has come loose.
If there is something that loose on the inside of the tranny itself, you would not likely be shifting very well at all.

My first S2000 saw a lot of track time. I had to replace the motor mounts twice. It may be wise to recheck them. I used a 3' lever from beneath the car to test mine.

thanks for all of the replies!!!!!

Harry - what do you mean by the 3' lever? I tried to move my engine with me just pushing on it and it appeared easier to move than Calvin's (he was at the same event). i think i need some leverage... is that what you are eluding to?

I am not 100% sure what they look like. I just had this one replaced last year but i also ran the car some since then plus they may not have installed it properly or tightly enough?

thanks!!!
