View Full Version : Gas Mileage?

On my AP2, I got 300-330 miles per tank with my best ever being 362.

On my AP1, I am getting 250-290 with my best being 292.

Is this typical mileage for an AP1? Or do I need to start looking at some things on the car?

Dave,

I just returned from another road trip. This one to Syracuse and back. In SD where the speed limits are 75 I got 25mpg. In all other areas (limits 70 or 65) I got 27 mpg. My MY03 now has a touch under 25k on the clock and these mpgs have been consistent since I bought the car in 2003.

I get about 280 - 305'ish a tank, and it's almost ALWAYS 27MPG...this morning it was 27.02 and that was on the low side...

I have a Fujita F5 intake, and most of my interstate driving is right around 70-74 mph...

Hope that helps...

BTW...I consider a tank to be when I fill up I put in b/w 9.5 and 10.5 gallons...don't know if that makes a difference or not...

I just got back from a road trip and averaged about 30 mpg in MY02 about 325 miles before I had to fill up.

Dave

After talking with Alex one day and he does get better mileage on his 06 than I do in my 02, but not a great amount. I think he said he can get like 340 from a tank, running it to empty. I can get about 290, but when I fill up, it only takes about 11 gals at the most, with zero bars showing. So if I went another 50 miles (25mpg) I would be at the 340 range. Going out to NM this summer, I had 275 miles with the light on, zero bars and it took 10.9 gals. On trips I can avg 27-30 mpg around town 23-28mpg.

So my question is, how any gals are you putting in? and is the gas mileage close?

lol nice one coop. i get just over 320 here at 6300 ft and I drive like I stole it in my 00. Just replaced my o2 sensors at 70k. I got 365 in one tank top down to kc at 80 mph.

That's pretty much what I get. I wouldn't worry about it.

Hmm well, at least I have an excuse to drive the Blue one occasionally now! "But Honey, it gets better gas mileage"! :)

No bars, light on last night I put 11.3 gallons in the AP1 with 253 miles on the trip odo. Looks like I'm not too far off - I did have some "spirited driving" on that last tank. :)

Just got back from a road trip to Iowa. Ran the speed limit on back roads and interstate. 34 mpg on my 02. A very nice surprise...

MPG is a lot more useful as there's quite a bit of margin for error if you're basing things off of miles/tank unless you can consistently empty your tank before filling (and the gauge isn't all that accurate). Are you driving mostly highway miles? I can get anywhere from 200 - 300 miles per tank depending on the city/highway ratio on my AP2.

:mountie: I agree. Stating how many miles to the tankful isn't a standardized form of reporting gas usage. As we all know, the S2000 has a very high "slosh factor" in the fuel gauge, especially when we approach "zero" bars. The fuel gauge can indicate no bars and we can still have an indeterminate amount of fuel remaining. Some have even reportedly gone another 50 to 60 miles and still not reached empty.
The specification on our fuel tank is 13.2 US gal, so if you've fuel up and have pumped less than this, you have not quoted the miles you've got on a whole tankful. Better to fuel up to the first click on the pump, zero the trip meter, drive till you fuel up again, fill to the first click, then do your calculations to get your MPG. From that, you can then use the 13.2 gallon factor to calculate just how far you could have gone on a tank. Of course, this figure will only be applicable if the next tankful is driven in precisely the same manner as the one you did the calculations on. If you cruise more in the city than the highway or if you do a trip that involves more passing and more elevation changes, the last numbers you got will only be a best guess.
I have typically gone about 300 to 350 miles on my AP1 with 4.44 gears and supercharger and still have not pumped the rated capacity of fuel into the tank. In all city driving, I usually get to about 200 miles before I fuel up, not wanting to risk running the tank too low.
I have often wanted to take along a small gas can and run the thing till it quits, but that might be hard on the fuel pump as it requires fuel going through it to keep it cool and lubricated. Another thing that stops me from doing it, is that unless I can drive on a perfectly flat stretch of road at a steady state speed, I can never be sure that I've gotten the last drop of gas due the that "slosh factor" I spoke of. Quite conceivably, one could be sucking air with as much as a gallon left if that gas is flying all over the tank's interior.

OK, cool. I will track it on a MPG basis for awhile and see if that sheds light on the subject. I will also fill up at the same pump, and stop at the first auto click-off on the pump nozzle.
By my non-rigorous method, though, and doing the same commute in both cars, the AP2 at this point seems to get better mileage. I'll get a little more rigor into the evaluation. :)

In my MY00 AP1, I normally averaged between 23-25 mpg, calculation based on miles/gallons-to-refill-tank. If I used it strictly for commuting I got about 22mpg.

Usually refilled anytime the fuel gauge got to two bars remaining. Usually got better results in the winter because I could run without the AC.

i have an ap2 and i get 240 miles when before i fill. and its always about 10 gallons of gas i put in. that means its 24 mpg right? which is average right?

The "slosh factor" can be quite significant. Last week I hit no bars and the light was on. I didn't feel like stopping that night, so I went home (the gas station is less than a mile from my house).

The next morning, after starting up, I noticed the light was off and I was back up to 2 bars! Drove her for another 30 miles and put 10.6x gals in on just over 300 miles. This tank was 85% Interstate driving at 70 - 80 MPH.

Really..... with a car like this, who cares. I am not going to change the manner in which I drive to get a couple more mpg. I usually fill up when I get to two bars; that's all I can tell you. In fact, in 40k miles I've only measured mpg once. On a 100 mile stretch of flat-road in South Dakota with the cruise set at 71 mph, top up, air-conditioning on, the car averaged 32 mpg. I'll only drive that slow once. :D

Second that... On MY06 I usually get between around 21 mpg - and not planning on changing my driving manners...:)

417.8 miles..... good thing the gas station was only about 1000 ft from where I was...
also, when I got back to the car, there was a cop behind me....
we had a good laugh......at my expense...
I will NEVEREVEREVEREVEREVEREVEREVER do that again... once that last bar goes off. I head for the station

I sure am not gonna stop driving it because of the gas mileage - I was mainly curious why my Ap2 seems so much better in this regard, and if it were typical.

Apparently it is typical, since no one said "Oh yeah, that happened to me at about 50k miles, I changed X and it got better". Remember, I've only got about 3k miles in my Ap1 after 49k in my Ap2 so I am definitly still learning the car and her quirks. I'm also on the lookout for anything that needs to be done to the car, so I can get it taken care of.

Looter,

Ain't no going back. Glad you confirmed my gut feel to buy the car, and encouraged me, I love it!
OTOH, for a daily commute, the Ap2 ain't a bad choice, and I need to keep the miles down on the Ap1 - put 3k on her already in a month! (you remember how I put on miles, right???) Extra gas mileage is a plus. The Ap2 is easier to replace. :)

Well, there you have it. 400 miles is possible if you run on fumes.
Was the cop just there by coincidence or did you do something he didn't like?

As far as AP2s getting more mpg, I thought Honda remapped the ECU to lean out the a/f mix a wee bit. If this is so, it might explain it. I know that my a/f at steady state cruising is almost dead on 14.7. Anyone with an a/f guage on an AP2? Honda engines seem to be able to run safely at very lean a/f mixes. The Fuel Vapor Technologies "Ale" is claimed to get over 100 mpg using an extremely lean fuel mix, rumoured to be in excess of 20:1. This is using a Honda 4 cyl engine.

Dave, I was on a major highway in NJ ( right by Giants Stadium ) at 2am.
didnt do anything wrong, except not getting gas, and passing up 1 about 1/2 mile before

We think he's got an insight battery pack hidden somewhere on that car.

:nono: Don't tell everyone my secret!!!

And for the record I got 39 MPG once. Barely any driving above 50 MPH, no VTEC, not a lot of stop and go, and it was at 6000+ elevation. My next best tank is only about 33. I normally get around 28 MPG, and I don't drive the car lightly. Just remember I'm at altitude so it helps a ton (just kills power too).

Daaamn... My usuall fill up is 10 gallons and I get 190- 210 miles in my 04 with 24K miles!!! My driving involves 50% city and 50% hwy, and I don't drive it that hard! Everything is stock. Would anyone have any ideas as to why I'm getting such low MPG???

I think your mileage is a lot like real estate. Your location makes a big difference. And not just your temperature, altitude, or humidity either, although these can and do play a part.

It has to do with the formulation of the fuel in the area you purchase it in. I have a Scangauge and can monitor my mileage real time. I notice that my mileage is good with Illinois, Iowa, and Wisconsin gas(30-34@ ~70) but drops significantly when I purchase gas in or near other States, for example Michigan or Minnesota.Sometimes as much as 4 mpg.

They must be playing games with the gas, perhaps because of smog laws?

I never knowingly purchase ethanol type(gasohol) fuels, but maybe some states don't have to post it on the pump.

I notice when I drive out west my mileage drops too. You wouldn't think they would have air quality issues in the Dakotas.:D

Ok, I got 27.07 mpg on the last tank of gas, so I guess all is well. 317 miles and 11.725 required to refuel.
