View Full Version : Clunk on bumps/dips

I'm calling this a clunking noise, but what it most sounds like is a rock thrown up by the tire and hitting the bottom of the car. It occurs very rarely, and I can not duplicate it when I want to. The first time I noticed it I was pulling out of an intersection, taking a right hand turn. At the time I thought it was a rock, and pretty much ignored it. I didn't hear it again till I was on a trip to Massachusetts from North Carolina and hit a fairly sharp dip in the road at about 65 MPH. The road I was on was pretty bad, and had many other bumps and dips, but the car never made another noise through all of it. The next time it happened I was turning into a gas station, lightly on the brakes, and it did it just as I hit the driveway. I've done this same thing many time before and since without a peep. While up in Mass, I took it to the local dealer to have them check it out, but of course it made no noise at all during a test ride, and they couldn't find anything loose anywhere that might be causing it. I'd like to take it to my local dealer and have them give it a look, but I don't know what to tell them.
Any ideas would be appreciated.

I have noticed something similar in my 07. When I am turning out onto a street or highway and I need to kind of get up to speed quickly. If I get on it too much taking off with the wheel cut too far I hear sort of a clunk.
I thought it was the VSA kicking in, keeping me from spinning out and "fish tailing" as I take off. (yes I am a stupid noob who needs VSA, feel free to flame me)
But I don't really know what it is, or more importantly what your sound is. Good news is you have found the right place to ask...
Oh repiv ... ...

I'm going to go out on a limb here and tell you not to worry about it. It is most likely the suspension either hitting the end stops when it reaches full compression or full extension. It could also be the sway bars where they go into the bushings that are shifting slightly when under tension. It doesn't do it all the time even if you hit the exact same lump or bump in the road because once it shifts, it won't shift anymore till it unshifts in the opposite direction after you do a "mirror image" loading. I think every car (not just an S2000) does this, especially ones with high performance suspension where you have sway bars and a lot of complex linkages.
Save your money. The dealer will most likely never happen to test drive the car at a time when the suspension has loaded itself to the point of making that noise for them.

Thanks for the feedback. I guess I'll ignore it unless it gets worse or something falls off!
This sounds like a sway bar clunk to me. Having used aftermarket ones, what your saying is exactly how they sound and react to turning, and a bump in the road. Its probably nothing, but if you want to check just take a look at your front sway bar, and make sure the brackets are still tight, and the endlinks are tight. If they are then don't worry about it. If the noise gets worse before you check it, you should think about checking it. Lose sway bars suck, I've broken two brackets, and one endlink with my aftermarket sway bars, but I'm under racing conditions. Anyway doesn't sound to bad, just take a peek if you get some time.
