View Full Version : Top Will Not Go Down Completly

I am having a problem with my ragtop.

Often, when I lower the top, when it gets on about a 45 angle, it binds. This does not happen every time but enough to be annoying. I back it up and try again and it works.

One time it made a loud crack noise as if the glass had shattered but when I brought it back up, the glass was fine.

Yesterday, when I lowered it, it stopped short of going all the way. I was low but still high enough to prevent opening the secret compartment all the way.

Any thoughts?

Lee - same thing happened to mee.... the pivot on the rib (the one with the elastic) isnt pulling itself back...
what I do, is puish the buitton w./ 1 hand and "help" the rib pivot back....

yea, elastics are worn out. A shop replaced my top and mine does the same dang thing now. A little frustrating. I have yet to hear the loud crack noise though...

I don't think this has anything to do with worn out elastics, but my top also no longer goes down far enough to put the tonneau cover on now. Anyone have an idea of what causes this? Thanks

I bought the elastic repair/replacement kit from Modifry at WTD last week even though I have not had the problem yet, (I figured I would save the shipping cost). I have not installed yet however a few locals have had this problem and this kit fixed it. Total repair time less than 1 hour and cost $20

Check out modifry.com for more info.

I can vouch for this. It works great, very simple procedure too. My elastic was virtually in tatters, then I put this beefy unit in. It it the perfect fix and better than drilling out all the rivets and putting the stock stuff back...

Thanks guys. That was a great help. I just ordered the fix from Modifry.
If I had known this was the fix last weekend, I could have gotten it from Modifry. He sat next to me at the Wake the Dragon dinner.

Thanks again. What a relief.

In the meantime, make sure you "help" the rib to move backwards. Not doing so will often lead to a badly torn top. That loud "crack" you heard may have been a hidden tear...

Like most automated moving parts, the top's pivot points can use with some periodic maintenance. I seems to me that combined with the elastics getting weak with age, some or all of the swivelling joints in the top are getting "sticky". Get some white lithium grease and Q-tips. Spray the grease onto the Q-tip and with the top about 1/2 open, wipe grease on both sides of as many of those joints that you can see. Once the grease has worked their way into the pivots, your top motors will work more effectively. If one side is stickier than the other side, this can produce an uneven top movement (side to side) and could cause folding problems.

becarful...my elastic went out on my top and it didn't go down properly and punctired two holes on my top. I'm not sure if Modifry is on this site, but i did see someone mention that he had some type of fix or something for it.

Thanks Dave, I did as you suggested. It freed up the movement a lot. I think that will solve the problem.
