Hey Dave
Last night in 6th gear at high speed wot, No more 6th to be found. Trouble getting into 3rd and 4th afterward.
I know you put in a ap2 tranny in yours. How about giving me some advice on ap1 or Ap2. I'm running a set of 456's but I have a 410 complete too. I'm looking for the best gear advantage. I know their were some synchro changes too. Was that in 2003 or 2004?
Then I suppose I'll get hold of hard top guy and order a new one.
It's 60 here this morning going to 80. Hows the great white N doing?

I'm the wrong Dave, but it's going to be 70 here tomorrow!! And I'd love to meet you when we're in Naples Jan. 6th-12th. If you're not busy one of those days/nights, let me know and we'll share some stories! - I'm interested in your transmission journey also ...

You can see my weather banner in my sig. It's getting pretty chilly here, but no snow at the moment.
As for the tranny situation, my AP3 tranny is coupled with the 4.44 (just like you). I've gotten used to it now and I would love to have the 4.56 for even more grunt. Hiway cruising rpm won't be too bad with the AP2 tranny as 5th and 6th will drop your rpm at 70 by about 200 to 300 rpm compared to the AP1 tranny.
I'm not sure when the syncros were changed. Keep in mind that the early editions of the AP2 trannies had a nasty little 2nd gear pop out problem. I've got one of those, but I don't track so I can live with it. It only pops out of gear during heavy engine breaking deceleration. I believe this is the same vibration that caused the early clutch buzz but on this tranny, it pushes 2nd gear out. I just hold my hand on the stick during those times. If you autocross, this could be a real nuisance. Honda does have a TSB on this. If you do buy a new one, you should specify one that wasn't built early in the tranny production.
All in all, I love the combination of the AP2 tranny, 4.44 gears and 9000 rpm redline and Vortech. If I didn't have the 4.44, I'd do the 4.56.

Thanks Dave
That's pretty much what I thought you'd say but I wanted to check Hiupefully I'll get it up on the hoist this week (it's really busy here--lots of cold canadians enjoying the weak dollar). I'll get hold of hardtopguy today and see if I can get a quote on a new one in a box.
I'm debating having it cyro'd cycled too.
Happy Holidays and Thanks

Stuff I learned
Honda DOES sell the 5-6 gear synchros by themselves with the updated sychros. You MUST buy the 1-2 and 3-4 gear SETS in order to get the carbon synchros.
I got this response too which I thought was interesting.
You could always go with the upgrade from AJ-Racing by using the Carbonetic Final Gear in the tranny. By doing this you basically get a AP2 tranny with your AP1 and using your AP1 case. A much more cost effective way, you have to get a AP2 secondary shaft in order to use this. It can be found here:
http://www.aj-racing.com/catalog/product.p...&cat=114&page=1 Now look at all the combinations.
So when it's torn down this week comes the big decision.
any other thoughts or input are appreciated.
A new one (which is tempting) is 3400. But if I rebuild one, I can get the stuff cyro-cycled.
Thanks

You know, you should be able to source an AP2 tranny for around 1K + shipping.
I also the wording on that Carbonetic part looks fishy. I don't think we have anything inside our transmission that looks like that part. Carbonetic makes gears for the B series motors.
The only thing I can find our their site for the S2000, is a set of bolts for the ring gear, or a clutch package.

Try car-part.com (it's like a network of junkyards) I've had good luck there with Nissan stuff

my '04 was first year for carbon fiber syncros. so far no problems with grind , jump or noise. Speeed shift is very fast but feels hard on the gears & clutch (probably the delay unit and fast pop) cannot complain, especially with power shift rather than speed, (once fear of slipping clutch has faded). Has 27,000 miles.
