View Full Version : Creaking/Popping and Unadjustable Camber

Everytime I take off from a stop I can hear a creaking/popping sound coming from the rear of the car. Would this suggest something is wrong? I know noises are hard to describe, but creaking/popping sums it up pretty well.
On top of that, I had a shop try and do an alignment on my car and they couldn't adjust the camber on the right rear wheel to anywhere near the spec that I wanted (UK spec). The car has suffered a bump that could be a cause for that, but what piece of the suspension would actually cause an inability to add much negative camber without messing up the toe?
Any suggestions/answers are greatly appreciated!

If it's a single creak or pop it could be the axle nut needs to be retorqued.

I had the same issue with the rear of the car. check this thread out http://forums.s2kca.com/showthread.php?t=17145 , it solved my problem and I feel safer knowing it is done right. It literally takes all of 10 minutes. I also found it is easier to just take the nut off with a breaker bar instead of trying to unstake it. The factory smashes the nut so you can't unstake it almost. Just unscrewing it with the breaker bar unstakes it and it comes off with no problem. I did this to 2 vehicles and no problem.

You didn't mention the year of car (important), but take the advice already given about the rear axle nut. It needs to be removed, cleaned, greased and re-torqued to 221 lb/ft. The old 181 lb/ft was deemed insufficient.
As for the creaks on take off, this may or may not be associated with the alignment situation. Certainly, having "bumped" the suspension could have bent something out of shape and may cause bushings to now creak upon suspension loading. What parts are bent will be hard to track down. It can be anything from the actual suspension components to the places where they are attached to the frame. If you whacked it hard enough, this can always lead to many problems and can turn out to be a nightmare.

Thanks for the info. I forgot to mention it's an '01, so I'll try re-torquing the axle nut.
As for the inadjustability issue I guess I'll just have to take a look underneath and hope that it's just something that is easily replaced.
