View Full Version : Comptech Reinforced Diff/lsd

I was curious to see if the reinforcement job Comptech does for our rear ends is really as "beefy" as they describe it to be. I'm very interested in having the complete job done by HTG due to time constraints, but has anyone ever heard of the reinforced diffs breaking? I mean, if money was not an object, which would you prefer to have, the Inlinepro swap w/ the VLSD from the 300zx, or reinforce the gear-type LSD from our cars?

I though our LSD was torsen type?

That inline pro one will take 1000 WHP, way overkill IMO, for a N/A thing is that if ther rear end will take whatever abuse your giving it then the abuse just moves on to the next weakest link on your car :)

I wish I had the CT diff job done when I had HTG build my diff. A couple of hundred dollars is worth it to me now.

Yes, I've heard of a CT re-inforced diff breaking, but I believe it was on a supercharged car. If you try hard enough, you'll break anything. The re-inforcement is like insurance. Do you do your fluid maintenance regularly? Do you drive the car to the point of abuse without due regard to cool down time? Do you feel lucky?
Some guys have had non-reinforced diffs on supercharged cars for many years without incident, while some NA cars have broken stuff after a few thousand miles. Is it the equipment or the driver?

repiv,
I'm pretty much "kind" to the lady, the only REAL hard driving I do is during shifting, full throttle w/ little clutch assistance. I've only grinded 2nd due to that problem w/ the AP1s. Other than that, my driving I'd say is nominal to sub-aggressive. Slight oversteer w/ the rear-end kicked out, but not too much to be worried about breaking a diff. I'm pretty much doing research to see if I should save up for the full HTG 4.56 and CompTech Reinforcement w/ just an N/A bolt on setup. I do love the superchargers, but that's too much money and not enough hardwork for the driver to pass people on the track.
I don't really think I'll be breaking the diff w/ my driving, I try and keep it smooth, but for the price I thought it would be worth checking out weather the Inlinepro really would be better for our cars, instead of the CT. I've had 4 s13 240sx and have used the r200v, good unit, but I'd say our torsen/gear type lsd is the better of the two. I wouldn't preffer having a viscous over our torsen type, the viscous type doesn't feel active enough and sometimes gets too sloppy compared the unit on the s2k.
Stratocaster,
I've been reading the comparison post through that link and I was under the impression that CT cryo treats the ENTIRE pumpkin. From what you've posted, they only beef up the caps and bolts. Do they have the pumpkin Cryo'ed?

If you mean (by "w/ little clutch assist) that you don't fully disengage the clutch during high load shifting, this is most hard on the transmission (syncros). It only becomes an issue for the rear diff if you do this repeatedly without due regard to a bit of a cool down period.
Changing rear gears, for most people, is a good performance modification and presents no danger of parts breakage if installation is done correctly and break in is done. Also, regard to fluid changes at the correct times and intervals is key to rear diff health. There's nothing wrong with driving it hard so long as there is an understanding of how to look after it.

Clutch gets fully disengaged, split second tho, but disengaged none the less. I'd say its very stressful on the tranny, I agree, but I dont do it often enough to break the diff I'd think. I'm basically looking at all the weak points I'd be concerned about regarding road racing w/ full bolt ons. The diff was the only thing I could think of and w/ regurlar maintenance (as I'm getting from your posts) it shouldn't be a problem for an N/A vehicle. I still might be looking into the COMPTECH if I go w/ the 4.56. I mean, while I have it out, why not? Right?

Exactly! Taking the diff out and apart is a good part of the expense. May as well do it while it's open.
