View Full Version : Keyless Entry/Alarm

My keyless entry/alarm has quit working. To begin with the remote that I use the most was giving me trouble. You would have to press it several times to get it to transmit. Now it does not work at all. There is no little LED lighting when you push any of the buttons.
I got out the other remote and followed the instructions to program it but nothing. The programing seems to be correct as it did what the manual says it should but it won,t lock or unlock the car.
I have replaced the batteries in both remotes, checked the connections on the main unit and checked the keyless entry fuse.
BTW, the unit is a Honda accessory after market system.
Anyone have any ideas??

What process did you use to set the remote? You need to do ignition on, off alarm open. On the 4th cycle the doors should lock. And then repeat the process for the second remote.

I followed the process to the letter. On one remote you can hear the locks click but that is all that happens. The other remote is completely dead.
I think that I have two problems. One with the one remote and one with the main control system.
I am going to go over the entire system again tomorrow. I would like to take it to the dealer but I installed it and I am not sure they will cover it under the warranty.

Are you using the oem remotes or an aftermarket alarm?

The remotes are the ones that came with the alarm and the alarm is made by Honda.

Trouble shooting this one may prove frustrating. First, make sure the actual door lock solenoids are working. Check the following (with both doors locked):
-use the key in the driver's door and unlock it. Does it unlock?
-turn the key a second time. Does it unlock the passenger door?
-get into the car and close the door. With both doors unlocked, push the door switch to lock. Does the passenger door lock?
You say you hear the locks clicking. When they click does that door lock or unlock? If not, the rod from the lock solenoid to the actual lock assembly may be loose or become disconnected.
It could be that the keyless entry module is not receiving a good signal. This may be due to the module itself going bad or that the wiring for the alarm system has degraded over time. The factory alarm system has a controller that resides under your seat. It may have its own inline fuse. I'm just guessing here as I don't have this option.

1). Rather than start a new thread - I'll revive this one;
I purchased my 2000 s2000 about a month ago and all it came with was 1 key. No remote keyFOB or anything else. Checked with the dealer and of course they want $90 each for just the remote FOBs not including an extra coded key.
There has to be a cheaper way to obtain the remote FOBs right??? I'm wondering if anyone has a number on the back of theirs for a year same as mine who might be able to help me out with this one. I see them for sale online but I also know there is a specific number on the remote keyFOB that has to be correct for it to be programmable to my car. Anyone have that number?
Any advice would be helpful. Thanks!
2). On a similar note: I checked under the driver's seat for a little box which I have read is the security device "if" the car has one installed. But all I found under the seat was a quarter. Hey at least I made a little extra $ for my efforts.
What I did find under the hood is what appears to be an alarm horn with the Clifford logo on it which I know makes alarms. I traced the wire from it to the battery and through the firewall outside the steering column. I don't see anything under the steering column inside the car but I do see a red LED light about .200" in diameter that has been located in the right driver's windshield pillar trim above dash level. (did that make sense???) See pic below.

3). In the little trash tray compartment behind the cupholder (reminder this is a 2000 model) there are two small square rubber buttons located there. I have no idea what those are.

Basically I'm just trying to figure out what all this stuff is and the CD owner's and service manuals I have for it doesn't help. I'd love to have the remote entry capability and figure out all this alarm stuff but I'm not even qualified to read "Electrical Problems for Dummies". I just paid over $500 and replaced the squeeling alternator and added a new belt while I was at it so spending another $200-300 on a key and remotes isn't too enticing.

 Dave....Mike...aka "Lovetodrive" had alarm problems awhile-back, too. He lengthened the antenna wire on the box, under the seat...and now it works perfectly.....

El Sid, you have an after market Clifford Alarm, you need to get replacement remotes from Clifford, that is if the system is functional.
The two little buttons in the center console are for the valet code, an example for using these would be if the alarm goes off you can enter a code using those buttons to disable it.
Do you know the previous owner, I'd ask them for more info.
There must be a brain somewhere in the car. You can either follow the wire back from the buttons in the center console, from the LED, or from the siren, those will lead to the brain. The brain will have the model number on it, and you can contact clifford about replacement remotes for that model number.

I hate after market alarms.
Mine came with some Ungo POS that would go off while I was driving. I managed to find a FOB for sale and tore the whole system out.

Fuse #5 and fuse 26 are both in the under dash fuse box are for the Honda alarm. There is also a 3 amp inline fuse under the left side dash. I would check that one first.
Buy the Electrical shop manual it would be a hugh help.

Valet Code buttons huh? That's interesting. Good to know it's supposed to be there. I was finding all kinds of things I didn't know about or didn't like on the car, mainly things that were added aftermarket which I always prefer NOT to see when I purchase a used vehicle.
Well in reponse to the previous owner ... I guess that would be a no. The car was peddled through several sources before I came upon it. Story I got was it was traded in to a dealership, sold wholesale to an import/exporter and that's where I stumbled onto it. The guy I bought it from barely knew where a key was at to start it, let alone any history on the car. :nervous:
I paid to have the car search history done before I purchased it but of course that's only as good as what has been reported so no real info there. The emissions report came back good and the accident report showed nothing but I know from experience it has had body work performed on it in several places. So again the report was of no definitive use cosmetic wise..
I think my preference would be to take it to a reputable alarm installation place and have them take out what is already there and start over fresh. Trying to track down matching components might prove troublesome or impossible at worst.
When guys selling their car say it's basically stock and think it's a bad thing, I tend to like that better than the guy who says it has every aftermarket part available and tons of extras. Just give me the stock car with untouched wiring harness. I'd much prefer that.
Thanks for the info, I'll do some more homework and find out what I can.

I have had the same problem with my Honda alarm system. It works intermittantly (spelling?), better when cold out than hot. I switched batteries and it did not seem to matter. I switched to the other fob and it works well now. I don't understand either. When it works it works perfectly and when it does not it does nothing.

I finally got my alarm fixed. i took it to another dealer and the replace the module under the seat. With the exception of a short range, it works fine now.
I think I will try to lengthen the wire antenna and see if the range improves.

Yes, best advice would be to take it to a good shop.
Your in the Woodlands?
Take it to Custom Car Stereo in Houston, from what I've heard they are the best and work on athlete's cars and stuff.
