i seen that xviper username before ... =)
anyway, i just purchased an 07... and i have a concern. keep in mind this only happened once so i do not think it's normal. car has 1k on it.
when i turned on my vehicle yesterday, i heard a RANDOM clunking noise. this noise is like a rubber mallet hitting my car. my door was open, so i might have heard somebody close their door? (it was 4am in morning and cold) i turned it off right away and it had a little shudder.
is this normal? i basically opened my door, pressed the clutch, turned on the car, and clunk. Thanks in advance.:help:

Need more details. Which direction was the noise coming from and is it repeatable? If it happens again have the dealer collect it on a flatbed trailer.

it just happened again... the thing is, my heater is on and my door is open. i read in the service manual you should have your electricals off when you turn on the car. i quickly shut it off and it shudders. turn it back on and it's ok.

A clunk like that on starting can be many things, but it would have to be related to the actually cranking and starting of the engine. All other electrical stuff that turns on with the ignition will do so even before you hit the starter button. To rule out things like the fan or other accessory, next time, turn the ignition on and wait a few seconds before hitting the starter button. Does it make the noise? Likely it won't. Then hit the starter. Does it make the noise? If so, it's related to starting the engine. It may or may not be of any consequence.
Since it's a new car, let the dealer listen to it. It could be a sticky starter drive or the engine may have shut down in an odd position in its cycle (which may be unimportant till you break in the engine).

it's the exhaust... i can narrow it down to the rear of the vehicle. something may be banging slightly on startup.

Makes sense. When you first crank the engine and get it started, there is quite a bit of engine movement. This movement travels to anything that's connected to it (ie, exhaust system). Let dealer fix this. It may just be a hanger that requires bending.

about the shudder...
that sounds like a good description of shutting down the motor immediately after starting it cold. after a cold start, the idle should be at about 2K rpm, and shutting it down in this regime will cause a mild shudder as the engine cuts off from a higher than normal idle. the clunk...sounds like you have that one figured out.

well...i turned off the heater and door lights and still clunk... it seems like the clunk only occurs when cold. i'll let somebody start my car in the morning tomorrow and stand behind the car. i actually got a test pipe installed but had to remove it. that's the only thing i can think of. work is 15 miles away and i do not have another car to drive.

I thought you've already determined that it's the exhaust?

ah... that's where the sound is comming from. but this morning, NOTHING. this would be so much easier on my life if it was something that happened frequently. then again, my car would be broken already. anyway, thanks for the help. looks like i'm going to just check every morning.

If it's coming from the back at start-up, it's likely just an exhaust rattle that comes and goes depending upon the way the engine rocks when it fires up. It's not going to hurt anything to drive it. Get the dealer to figure out where it's hitting when the exhaust shakes.

i just went under my car... there are 3 hanging points and none are bent.
i have scheduled to visit the dealer Saturday, but i have a feeling it will be in vain because the noise is so random. I ran my hands across the space between my exhaust/muffler/pipes and there is enough room to compensate any starting jolt. in fact, it hardly even jolts at all. i just hear a clunk/pop on my left muffler. i want to sell this car already LoL.

Grab each tailpipe and give it a good shake in all directions. You might have something coming loose in one of the muffler insides.
