Has anyone ever removed the interior rearview mirror mounting button from the windshield? I have a new auto dimming mirror with compass that I would like to use but the mounting is different that the Honda OEM mount.

I haven't, but according to Helm's, pry it off with a screwdriver. Wrap the screwdriver with tape.

It is my interpretation that the "prying with screwdriver (taped)" applies to the plastic cover. Removing the "mounting lug" may be a bit more challenging. "Prying" may risk windshield breakage. I've never done it, but I would strongly suggest you contact an auto windshield shop and ask them. Unless someone here has exact knowledge, what worked for them may have been purely luck. Our windshields are quite expensive.

I just found instructions that say you can break the adhesive grip by slicing under the button with a razor blade. As for the windshield, it will possibly need to be replace soon anyway. I took a large rock in the lower left quadrant during a drive to FL this Christmas. It has a small pit with several small cracks emanating from the center. SafLite tried to patch it but I don't think it helped much. Wish me luck.

 I turned mine into my insurance company last summer for rock chips... The adjuster told me to say...." I had a rock hit my windshield this morn..on the way to work", I did & they replaced for free......!!! Now the new one has a few chips from the Dragon, last fall.... Our windshioelds are "chip-magnets"..............

My insurance told me that they would try the patch (at no cost to me) first. If I did not like the results I would have to pay my deductible and they would replace it. I may wait until after WTD to replace it, if then.

 That may be a "VERY" good idea...Waiting till after the Dragon... I have added you to the list of attendees for the Cincy caravan from Hooter's.

You can always practice removing the mounting lug on the old windshield.

Yea, I think I will do that, but I'm going to wait until it warms up.

I just hate it when you button falls off. I'm afraid to ask how much the windshield for the S is.

Here's how I did it and it worked great for me. If you break your windshield your fault not mine. I heated up the button with a heat gun, then used vice grips to grab a hold of it and just twisted and it came right off.

You might try methlyene chroride to disolve or soften the glue before any attack with tools on glass.
