Let me start this sub-forum off with a big HELLO and a welcome to one and all. Old friends know me as "Xviper" from my past life. "Repiv" is simply "Viper", spelled backwards. ;) You can continue to call me "Xviper" if you wish or you can call me Dave. (I've been called a lot worse, so any of these will work. :p )
I am greatly honored by those who are at the helm of this fine forum who made this happen. Let me not forget all the members and participants here for their warm welcome and their encouragement to make this my new home. To all of you, my heart felt gratitude.
Those who remember me, have witnessed all my "How To's" on just about every maintenance item on an S2000 (and a few more other mechanical things). I don't profess to know it all, but I invite you to post your questions, suggestions, contributions and ideas here that pertain to the mechanical aspects of owning an S2000. I'll answer as best I can, if I can and I'm sure that the other knowledgeable folks here will aid in this venture.
Of course, if you are shy about posting here, I am always available via PM.
Someone asked me years ago all the things that I've done to mod my car. Here was my answer just so you know the kind of "tinkering" I've done to it:
(It is an original year 2000 Silverstone, purchased in Oct/00. It is my 4-seasons, daily driver with about 45K miles on the clock. Walking to work for many years explains the lower mileage.)
My S2000 mods:
"Performance":
Vortech intercooled supercharger (Vortech airbox and filter replaced with JR filter and homemade "umbrella") with Spearco FMIC.
Moroso oil catch can.
4.44 rear gears with Yellow Box.
Toda header.
NGK copper racing plugs.
Fujitsubo cat back exhaust.
Gauges - Autometer oil press, water temp, boost. With SOS twin gauge pod.
AEM UEGO wide band A/F guage.
Apex I-moni ECU data display.
Panavise mount (for cellphone, GPS, etc).
Home made diff casing fin extensions.
Diff casing temp monitoring gauge.
Modifry shift beeper.
Rick's Titanium Magnum shift knob.
Top Secret "style" CF hood (for heat release).
Hood pins to keep the hood from lifting at the edges at speed.
Winter tires during the appropriate season. Michelin Arctic Alpins on the OEM 16" rims.
Hardtopguy clutch kit - OEM disc, TO bearing, Comptech lightweight flywheel, ACT HD PP (awaiting installation).
AP2 transmission (awaiting installation).
Cosmetic:
OEM '04 rear wing.
Clear side markers.
Xenon blue high beam bulbs.
Billet Aluminum antenna.
Rick's "S" badges.
"Mingster" aluminum dead pedal.
OEM Hardtop (and winch to remove, put on and store when not in use).
OEM side strakes.
S2Ki.com licence plate frame (souvenier "I'm a Legend on S2Ki.com" plate frame).
17" Volk Mercury Silver CE28N rims - with Kumho ECSTA Supra 712 tires (225 front - 255 rear).
'04 front bumper and lip.
Sound:
Rear speaker panels using stock speakers.
Replaced front speakers with jvc4way645.
Sony 10 CD disc player.
Convenience:
Accessory power socket re-wired to constant available power.
Trunk release re-wired to only operate while car is ON.
Passenger side remote door unlock.
Clock/outside air temp mounted on radio door.
Relocated tool kit to above spare tire for extra trunk space.
Modified cruise control button divider for easier one finger cancellation.
Convex driver's side outside mirror.
Autolok, one touch up and down driver's window.
F1 cup holder: http://www.radbcs.com/cupholder_f1.htm
Protection:
3M Scotchcal film (Xpel) on all frontal surfaces, including mirrors, headlites and area of rocker panel just in front of rear wheels.
Static cling window tint for rear plastic window.
Fleece roof well mat to protect inside of plastic window.
Muz floor mats.
Winter floor mats.
Hardwired Passport 8500 with homemade visor mount.
Dual Fiamm "Highway Blasters" horns.
Zaino treatment on paint.
Upgraded oil jet bolts (4 hole).
5 year long life engine coolant.
Installed "fiber optic" in radio door to make radio blinking light visible when radio door closed.
McGard front seat lock bolts.
Home made rear seat lock bolts.
Spoon magnetic oil pan and tranny pan drain bolts.
Locking gas cap. (My wife's last car had the remote fuel door pried open - gas cap stolen, luckily nothing poured into gas tank.)
Wet Okole neoprene seat covers.
Cabin turbulence mods:
Full size Rick's aeroscreen insert (but drilled full of holes for better wind management).
Roll hoop inserts (plexiglass).
Davies headrest pads (this is also for resting my head on).
Mods that have "come and gone":
Mingster intake "snorkel".
AEM CAI.
Coastal Metals front lip splitter.
Chrysler Neon R/T rear spoiler.
Amuse style front lip.
Denso Iridium IK-24 spark plugs.
Sony 1621 door speakers.
Neuspeed cat back exhaust.
Autometer narrow band A/F gauge.
Goodrich Winter Slalom on front, Bridgestone Blizzak MZ-01 on rear, ADR 16" multispoke rims - 44mm offset, 7"
Airwalker "style" urethane lip (mangled by Port Angeles ferry, tore off by huge dip in the road near Sacramento)
Brockway racing display (reads ECU info of engine parameters like coolant temp and intake air temp) - physically too big to be mounted for daily use.
T1R test pipe with mechanical O2 similuator.
Spoon X-brace.
Fiberglass/nylon bug mesh to protect radiator and A/C cannister from rocks and bugs. (not needed due to Spearco FMIC)
*Note: With the exception of the actual rear gear calibration and the mounting and balancing of tires, all the above were done by me at home.

ok here's your first question, with a little lead in story:
i have read several stories over the months about people accidently downshifting to 2nd gear when they wanted 4th, at high speed, and in doing so damaging the retainers among other things...potentially even blowing their engine. i always thought..gee i'll never do that. wrong. my other vehicle is a ford truck with much much wider gates in the shifter, and after not driving the S for a while...well you get the picture. the (potentially) good news is that when the downshift happened, i was somewhere between 53-58 mph. it's a MY2006, which redlines second gear at 59 mph. so i couldn't have over-revved it. my only concern is that i barely blipped the throttle, then let the clutch out, so basically the transmission slammed the engine from ~3.5K all the way to ~7.8K. i immediately put the clutch back in, and as i did so checked the tach, i saw it all the way to redline, but the red wasn't illuminated. should i be worried? everything sounds/smells/seems to work fine.
honestly i'm not that worried, i just wanted a more knowledgeable opinion than my own. thanks.

In future, I would invite you to start a new thread in this forum as this one is meant to be an introductory, "Hello" sort of thread. I will give you a response nevertheless.
An AP2, in 2nd gear, at 8000 rpm, will result in a road speed of 56.5 mph. Worst case scenario is that you did achieve 58 mph and you did fully engage the clutch. This would have resulted in the revs getting as high as 8200 rpm. By your description of what happened and since you may not have been going that fast and because you reacted quickly, you should be fine. The biggest difference between the engine accelerating itself through that rev range and drivetrain accelerating it, is that the "rate" of acceleration in an accidental downshift is far greater. Was it severe enough to cause a problem down the road? The odds are against it but not completely zero. If it were me, I would not worry about it any further.

No problem. Thanks for understanding. I try to be succinct whenever possible. People usually prefer the answer to their enquiry. Small talk and such are easily accommodated in the other sub-forums we have here.
Actually, this thread is sort of for small talk, so I guess I could have given a more lengthy response. :brew:

I can't find the words to say what I am feeling right now. This is great. We now have one of the premier authorities on the care and feeding of our S2000 in a forum of his own.
S2KCA is getting better every day.
Congratulations Dave and thank you for doing this. Congratulations S2KCA for providing the forum for this.

Hehe! I briefly scanned through the "How To's" here and there are a lot of threads dealing with this sort of stuff. I don't think those who wrote them need me to re-invent the wheel. Perhaps I'll just add a reply with extra infor where they may be helpful. I'll go through my old "How To's" and see if any would be useful to post here.

Dave,
Urmil brings up another good point. You will be receiving your first issue of the Redliner in the mail in early December. If you have any interest in contributing an article in future issues (it's quarterly) let me know or send a PM to Salsa. She is our NW RD and newsletter editor. In fact, I believe you would fall in her region. :)

I look forward to seeing the next one so I can get an idea of the "flavour" of what the content is. I'll keep your invitation in mind.
I've begun to start new threads with materials dealing with points of interest where I haven't found any other such information pre-existing. Over the next many days and weeks, you will see many more such threads regarding things that should be of help to the backyard mechanic.

Yes, I got the whole package. I'll read it more carefully when time permits. I wasn't sure if that was what you were referring to but now that I know, I can get a taste of what's in them.
BTW, I was tremendously impressed with that membership package. I wasn't expecting anything more than a little card (like the "other" place -- ). I was so pleasantly surprised when all that "stuff" came out of the envelope. I still haven't had time to view the CD. Looking forward to it.

Thanks for the offer of doing some DIY threads. I'm gradually "re-writing" my old ones over to here. The only one that is often asked for that I haven't done yet is a brake fluid bleed and change with pictures. If you have such pics, I'm sure the membership here would find it useful. Hey Mike, I've always just been a phone call away for you. Thanks for the offer, but the "Flames" just have never been one of my "to do" things.
The old clutch is still working well, but the new HD one should help when things get really hot. The new AP2 tranny should give the car a bit more down low grunt. Besides, I needed another winter project anyway.

Hey Dave, I decided to become a member since i knew that you were on here. Now I've come to really like this community and the attitude/maturity of everyone on this board. I'm looking forward to exchanging more posts with you. Because I definitely have questions! :) (don't worry, I'll search first! :D )
Thanks for helping the noobies like myself with your past experiences and expertise. I haven't exchanged direct conversations with, but you've helped with me with many past threads. I wanted to express my sincere appreciation for your time and dedication!
Paul
Paul, so nice to see you here. Little by little, we're seeing some of the finer folks show up here.
I never had much of a problem with people who asked questions without searching first. I only had an editorial for those who freely admitted they were simply too lazy to look first. Like the guy who posts up, "My manual is downstairs in my garage and I'm just too lazy to walk down there to read it". Those guys, I loved to tease. In fact, I even started a thread once to ask others to "take it easy" on people who didn't search first. :D
Welcome aboard.
