So... We all met up tonight and got the group together (well, for the most part). Don't tell them I said that, but they all seem to be a friendly bunch and we should have fun the next seven days. ;)
A bunch of cars lined up in front of the hotel we're staying at tonight:

Dinner at the Rustic Inn (and rustic it was -- the lights went out for a second, so they brought out candles just in case):

Ted & me. Everybody else seemed to have a dinner date, so we decided to hook up for the evening. ;)
Bart decided not to join us.

While we were waiting for our tables, we visited the knick-knack shop next door. Joe found a new hair piece to prevent any future jokes about his Homer Simpson likeness.

Driving up was fairly uneventful. Only got tagged by a cop once; got my revenge today when I was tailing some idiot driving 70 in the left lane on I-35, and when I was about to floor it to pass him, it turned out to be an undercover cop (I think he gave Joe the evil eye when he passed him); no tickets.
A beautiful day for a drive. I met up with Joe and Joe Pat in Clear Lake, IA and we continued north together. We got to the lake around 2:30pm.
http://forums.s2kca.com/photopost/data/15202/289IMG_0876-med.JPG
Biggest surprise for me for the day: My fuel consumption was way down. We were driving from Clear Lake to Two Harbors on one tankful of gas. 323.5 miles -- and I still had two bars left! That has never happened to me before.
http://forums.s2kca.com/photopost/data/15202/289IMG_0880-med.JPG
Got gas in Two Harbors and only was able to put in 10.5 gallons (Joe squeezed in a gallon more -- I guess all his mods are taking their toll :) ). They even have a BP in this town!
More to come tomorrow. Official kick-off takes place at 9:30am.

Looks like I missed a great meal and great company at the Rustic Inn -- but I had to go back down to Duluth and see my brother and his family for dinner (haven't seen them in over a year) and give my niece a b-day gift. Also, I had to pick up a package from my brother (I used his house as a mail drop), but more on that tomorrow AM.

My God, that's a one of kind pic, so pristine and tranquil. Everything fits with an almost spiritual harmony, like nature had intended. Other than high priced advertising photos, I've never seen anything like it: an S2000 with the boot actually on. Perhaps that explains your gas mileage.
Now the boot pic is rare, but how 'bout a moose by the side of the road.
Keep the pics/blog rolling; you're making me home sick.

Day 1 of the Lake Superior Circle Tour took us from our gathering point in Two Harbors to Grand Portage. We stayed at a casino, hence no internet connection yesterday (they want you gambling, not surfing. Coincidentally, also no cell phone connection. My phone has been dead for the last two days). We left mid-morning and drove out to Split Rock Lighthouse (http://www.mnhs.org/places/sites/srl/).
http://forums.s2kca.com/photopost/data/15202/289IMG_0909-med.JPG
They did a good job restoring the facilities; you can get on the tower itself, tour what used to be the compressor/engine room for the fog horns, and tour the living quarters of the light house staff. There are three houses (one master and two assistants and their respective families), and they restored one to the state it was in in the 1920s (the plan is to restore a second one to the way it was in the 1940s, when the Coast Guard took over the facility).

http://forums.s2kca.com/photopost/data/15202/289IMG_0905-med.JPG
Memorable exchange of the day:
Joe: Shall we go look inside the residence?
Bart: Yes, and it's from the 1920s, so you can tell us what all the appliances were used for.
Jason: I don't think his short-term memory is that good.
 (You had to be there.)
They also had some people dressed up in the old uniforms running around the place to explain things.
http://forums.s2kca.com/photopost/data/15202/289IMG_0906-med.JPG
The "guts" of the light house are still there, and supposedly the whole contraption is still floating on the original four pounds of mercury they used in 1910 (plus one early refill a few days later).

After we got done with the light house, we called Ted and he joined us for the drive to Grand Portage. On the way, we took a little excursion on Hwy 61 towards Ely -- I think it was about 20 miles of twisties each way, with 130 turns. Sort of like a higher-speed Dragon; it was quite enjoyable. :)
We took a little break on the way back; as you can see, the place was a hotbed of activity with the most modern facilities available to man:
http://forums.s2kca.com/photopost/data/15202/289IMG_0912-med.JPG
By the way -- out there, always make sure to read the fine print:
http://forums.s2kca.com/photopost/data/15202/289IMG_0910-med.JPG
See, that's why I keep telling you guys to get your gas at BP instead. No funny games... ;)
After we got back to the lake, we stopped at a little vista and watched some people climb the rocks (you could not pay me enough to do that; that's almost like jumping out of a plane).
http://forums.s2kca.com/photopost/data/15202/289IMG_0915a-med.jpg
Naturally, there also had to be the obligatory car picture. :)
http://forums.s2kca.com/photopost/data/15202/289IMG_0914a-med.jpg
We continued on to Grand Marais where we had dinner, and then we continued on to the hotel.
http://forums.s2kca.com/photopost/data/15202/289IMG_09181-med.JPG
The others have more/better pictures, so stay tuned for their additions and updates.

Day Two took us from Grand Portage to Marathon, ON. For the most part, it was just driving, with two major stops at Ouimet Canyion and the Aguasabon River Gorge. After a leisurely breakfast, Ted took us to the border before he turned around (but not until afte rhe promised to be at S2KDays in San Antonio, right?!) while we continued into unchartered territory (aka Canada).
I would like to point out at this time that the only people who were pulled into the station for a secondary inspection were the tour members from Minnesota. I guess the Canadians know that they cannot trust their neighbors).
Anyway, we filled up the cars before crossing over into Canada (I'd rather pay $3.15 per gallon than $1.20 per liter; even if those are not "real" dollars). Ouimet Canyon is about 150 km away from the border (yes, we did change the S2000s' dashboards to metric).

There is a legend about the canyon where some giant who lived waybackwhen helped some god do something or other and in the process inadvertently killed that god's daughter. He hid the body; god-dude found it and reburried it, and turned him into stone to guard the grave. Well, that's the Cliff's Notes version, at least. Here he is:
http://forums.s2kca.com/photopost/data/15202/289IMG_0925a-med.jpg
I guess you can make out an Indian's head if you squint your eyes.
We continued on along the lake. The scenery is breathtaking, but I could not take any decent pictures while driving (reapplying sunscreen was difficult enough), so you'll have to wait for the others to post their additions.
http://forums.s2kca.com/photopost/data/15202/289IMG_0929-med.JPG
The second stop was at the Aguasabon River Gorge.

http://forums.s2kca.com/photopost/data/15202/289IMG_0937a-med.jpg
We then continued on to Marathon, where we checked into our hotel (or should I say "hotels" since they lost a confirmed registration (hey, I just realized that it was the Minnesotans again; I am detecting a trend here!) and some of us had to go to another one) and had dinner (and let me not lose any choice words about the so-called "service" we got).
Tomorrow will take us to Sault St. Marie.

The part of the story that Ulrich isn't telling is that he got the best gas mileage he has ever gotten on a tankfull of Citgo gas he purchased at Clear Lake. No "Ultimate" there.

Details, details... Must have been that extra octane I got compared to what they sell in Texas.

They stop the Minnesotans at the border while letting that rogue German through with no questions asked???? That's what happens when our gummint stops watching the borders...
I SO wish I had taken Ulrich up on the passenger seat offer. Trust me, riding shotgun up there looks SO much more enjoyable than the moving-in-102-degree-heat that I did instead! :(

Today we drove from Marathon to Sault St. Marie. Not a lot to say, I think this picture shows it all...
http://forums.s2kca.com/photopost/data/15202/289IMG_0942-med.JPG
We had a few stops on the way, the first one in Wawa (and apparently not everything is bigger in Texas).
http://forums.s2kca.com/photopost/data/15202/289IMG_0938-med.JPG
There were actually quite a few of those oversized loons in town; not sure if they have some special meaning to the locals. We did hear that they found some gold and diamonds in the area, though, so if you want to get in at the bottom of the boom, stake your claim now. ;)
After this my camera/battery died, so I'll let the others show and tell the rest...
EDIT: Apparently it is not a loon but a goose. And the Wawa Geese are supposed to be famous. Probably not as world-famous as our very own Silk, but anyway.....

As Ulrich noted today it was a rainy, foggy day on and near the eastern side of the Lake and so we spent most of the day driving in the rain.
We awoke to rainy drizzle in Marathon on the northside of the lake:
http://forums.s2kca.com/photopost/data/500/2101day_3_marathon_rainy_morning-med.jpg
(some time I will have to eat at wok with chow and stop by marathon motor sports and see what S2000 mods they might install  )
We had a little break in the rain and stopped at Katherine Cove after the stop in Wawa:

The rain did not stop an artist from working on a painting:
http://forums.s2kca.com/photopost/data/500/2101day_3_katherine_cove_artist_in_rain-med.jpg
Although the fog and rain meant we had less scenery to enjoy while driving and could not drive with the top down, at the end of the day we arrived in Sault Ste. Marie and the hotel right on the St. Mary's. We had a nice view overlooking the river and locks and I saw a few ore boats coming and going and saw a few tour boats:

Once you get past the Soo there will be more areas that we have travelled. I hope that you can get down to Taquamenon Falls. They are really nice to see and the last time we were there, the brew pub had a good selection for us to sample with the pasty I had for lunch. Enjoy!!

Do me a favor and take a photo of the humble lodging in Copper Harbor just East of the ferry handing. That's where I stayed when I went on a photo trip to Isle Royale. When our trip was over I do remember getting some excellent pizza and cheap Labatts Blue at a place nearby - one of the larger and more modern options. There aren't many to choose from. :D

Here are day 5 photos. We started the day in Marquette and 4 cars went to Big Bay Light House where we were greated by a young buck, while the other folks checked out the Blue Berry Festival in Marquette, we then meet back up and drove to Houghton and saw MTU, the esteemed bastion of higher learning that Westsidebilly went to, and then drove to a little town called Gay Michigan which presented a photo op, and then drove the scenic drive to copper harbor at the tip of the keewenaw penninsula. No phones in the hotel here but we have wireless internet and I am sitting out on the patio enjoying a nice cool evening with the other tour participants, enjoying an adult beverage.

Today's route took us from Marquette to Copper Harbor. We had a late/leisurely start as we did not need to cover much fround today, so some of us stayed in town to visit the Blueberry Festival that was taking pplace, while the rest of us drove out to Big Bay Point to visit yet another lighthouse. I was actually trying to get to the local Honda dealer to get an oil change done, but they were already overbooked for teh day and did not want to see me. Oh well, Monday in Chicago...
Anyway, we drove out to Big Bay Point and enjoyed the local scenery and weather:

They actually turned the lighthouse into a Bed & Breakfast, and the rates were not unreasonable in case someone needs an idea for their next vacation. Lots of wonderful art in the backyard, too.
http://forums.s2kca.com/photopost/data/15202/289IMG_0961-med.JPG
Afterwards we met up in Marquette again and began our trek to Copper Harbor. Our route took us through Houghton, which I understand is home of the alma mata of our very own EastSideWilly -- it really did not make as bad an impression on me as you would have expected. ;)
We then continued on through L'Anse (more cops with radar on that road than I've seen on the rest of the trip combined) till we hit this little town:
http://forums.s2kca.com/photopost/data/15202/289IMG_0970-med.jpg
I guess people have tried to steal that sign before; otherwise they would not have posted that warning. :nono:
It was a bit ironic, though, that it was a straight road leading to Gay. And when we took that picture, we left our cars in Gay Park Road. As we took the picture, the Male Man drove by with a special delivery. And when we left, we took a backroad and passed the Gay Bar.
We continued on our trip to Copper Harbor, taking the scenic route that Bart selected.
http://forums.s2kca.com/photopost/data/15202/289IMG_0972-med.JPG
...and then it turned very scenic indeed.

WSB thanks for the head's up about the speed enforcment efforts around baraga. There was a cop in an SUV waiting for us at the baraga county line and he followed us for at least 10-15 miles. we saw 2-3 of his colleagues before we were out of there.

So... The last day of the Circle Tour, for all practical purposes. Doug broke off to meet a friend on the way home this afternoon, Bart skipped out on the rest of us to spend the night/day at his father's cottage, and I'll head to Chicago tomorrow. We did make the last night count, though, as the rest of us had an impromptu pizza party with beer (or is that beer party with pizza?) tonight. :)
Anyway, the day started out with a drive to Hunters Bay, a little access point to the lake not too far away from Copper Harbor. Actually, the day really started out with a visit to a local rock shop where some people were browsing to buy some minerals. I guess everyone has a hobby. ;)
It was interesting what difference the weather makes in setting the tone of the place. The temperature dropped probably 30 degrees compared to the day before and it was a lot more windy, so the beach was not as cozy.

We then continued on scenic route 26 along the lake to the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park. It was very peaceful, very green, and we had a beautiful view -- almost 20 miles, I think.

After that, we drove to Ashland where we are staying for the night. Well, some of us, at least. Bart has a few more pictures which I am sure he will upload in the next few days.
All in all, it was a good week with a good bunch of people, and overall we were rather lucky with the weather. I am sure there will be another trip next year, so seriously consider joining in the fun.
Thus endeth this log. :)

The good news for me is that I'm sitting in my hotel room in San Jose right now (thanks to my employer) and Carol (Salsa) will be picking me up first thing in the morning to join the Bay Area Chapter folks (and beyond) for a day long "cruise" down the PCH to Big Sur (or possibly further).
I can't wait! I worked out here for about three months about ten years ago and had a Miata rental. I went as far South as Monterey one day but not any further. This should be a blast and I'm really looking forward to meeting some of the crew out here!

Thanks to everyone for coming along on the tour. We had a great group and it was fun to meet new people. Thanks to Joe and Jo Pat we had great snacks of venison jerky and dried banana chips the entire way.
I am sorry we missed the pizza/beer party in Ashland, but the look on our girls’ faces when we arrived a day early after driving up the coast and taking the ferry was priceless.
Here are some photos from the last day:
The sign in copper harbor showed that it was not too far from Miami -- I bet Ullrich could do that drive in a day and a half, and maybe 4-5 tanks of gas.

The Lake in Clouds was serene and very green, but I bet in the fall the foliage is awesome. There are lots of trails to and around the lake and the lake of the clouds in this park, and even rustic cabins one can rent for a week at a time. This might be a good place to return in the fall for a week!

I'm thinking of putting something together for next year, if the interest is there. Probably around Tennessee: Anything music-oriented (Memphis, Nashville, Dollywood, etc.), maybe a visit to the Jack Daniels distillery, and whatever else lies on the way.

You are a brave man. After we got on the road from that last pit stop and you caught up with me, did you not wonder why I was staying behind all of a sudden doing under 75? For about 16 miles or so, my V1 indicated a strong Ka radar source behind me -- I never could conclusively identify where it was coming from, but I suspect it was that black GMC SUV that you passed along the way... :nono:

The entire Porkies region is awesome in the fall. Peak color is usually mid September there, and it can snow as early as mid September, especially higher up inland. Some of my friends and I camped there in early October once, after the park had "closed". Awesome view - I probably have some old APS film pictures of it... undeveloped

Was anyone else wondering why Ulrich was getting such good gas mileage? I found out why... He wasn't using BP.

Besides, y'all made me do it.
Actually, the best mileage I got on that trip ended up being 372 miles, and I still had two bars left. I maye have squeezed in an extra half gallon when I filled up before that, but other than that I have no explanation (except maybe that driving 100 km/h through Canada apparently does affect your consumption after all)...
Driving back to Houston I am down to the customary 300 miles per gas tank. Oh well, it was nice while it lasted. ;)

Here are some out-takes and bloopers:
Notice that Ulrich seems well experienced in covering his face from camera shots in questionable situations!

I set the timer for 2 secs instead of 10, but this photo somehow is funny for another reason:

Well, obviously it is not me, I have a bigger gut and as a result never tuck in my shirt with shorts. :p And, as Griffon will verify I had on a Rolex, not a Seiko.
And the cincher is that I have a wedding ring on my left hand. This is obviously a photo of a "confirmed" bachelor i.e., no ring, or white non-suntan line where a ring has been. :D
Also, how would I have taken the photo of myself?

Actually, at katherine cove, I thought I found the log:

You take a picture of the MTU sign in front of Delt Sig's house, but not one of the brick dick where I spent 4 years of my life? :banghead:
... and you didn't stop at the Gay Bar? :thumbdn:
We were driving through MTU and I tried to catch the sign when it had the temp flashing so we could make some of the folks in Indiana, Illinois and Texas a bit jealous.
We were going to stop by the Gay bar, but I didn't want to hear Joe offer to "push in" Ulrich's stool 100 times in 5 minutes, so I quickly lead everyone out of town. Plus, I was eager to get driving on the 5 miles of freshly laid gravel on the scenic drive, just up the road . . . :(

Did anyone get any shots of that ride on HWY 41 down the mountain to Copper Harbor after the 5 miles of "scenic" gravel road?
I think Melinda took a couple. She also shot a short video with the digital camera during that stretch of road. I will post some later after my quota limit expires.

The UP has been favoring chip and seal over asphalt the last 5-7 years, since it's easier to get done in the 5 weeks between winter  .
Seems like you guys hit the 'chip' portion.

One of the things I HATE most about Michigan is there are several counties that like to toss down tar, cover it with small stones, and let the public pack it down!! Of course they put up 35 mph speed limits which don't mean crap since most of the people don't have a car they give a **** about. They claim it's cost effective. Trash everyone's car to save rolling it in; or just doing it right the first time. Which makes the most sense? My blood pressure boils everytime I run into this. The people at the Dept of Trans must be car haters. Jun, Jul, and Aug are their favorite months to do this. Why the general public puts up with it can only reflect what Michiganders really think of cars - they should be replaced ever year.

Dave, honestly, that's prevelent in a lot of places I've been. You won't find many 2nd tier roads in the southern states that aren't chip and seal.

'
One need only look at the cars driven by many residents of Northern Wisconsin, much of Michigan and the UP of Michigan -- rusty pitted out cars, due to the harsh winters and all of the sand and salt put down during a good chunk of the year. I guess since the car is going to be trashed anyway why worry about it if you live there, but I would have liked to know about the gravel section before hand, and all of the maps I have show it as a surfaced (pavement or blacktop) road, not a chipped rock and tar special. Since this was a scenic drive" one would not expect this to be a road driven by locals and would expect that the summer tourists would be the primary users. All the more reason to not give a Sh!t if you are the local county or state dept. of transp. At least we got just the dusty gravel and not the tar!
I guess I now know why Detroit thought that a car should last 40-70 thousand miles at most and should be replaced every 2-3 years. In Michigan, that is probably about the true life of a car. :)
I am just glad that the unexpected foray into gravel was only 5 miles, even though it seemed like 20-30 (it might have been due to the 15 -20 mph we were driving on that). While we were inching along trying not to stir up too much dust or gravel, along came a jeep cherokee flying/sliding around a corner going the other direction doing 35-45 mph.

Young men, there's no need to feel down
I said, young men, pick yourself off the ground
I said, young men, 'cause you're in a new town
There's no need to be unhappy
Young men, there's a place you can go
I said, young men, when you're short on your dough
You can stay there, and I'm sure you will find
Many ways to have a good time
It's fun to stay at the YMCA
It's fun to stay at the YMCA
They have everything for young men to enjoy
You can hang out with all the boys
It's fun to stay at the YMCA
It's fun to stay at the YMCA
You can get yourself clean, you can have a good meal
You can do whatever you feel

And all that remains is the pictures and the names
